Two boys, one city, and their places in it

Moonwalking by Zetta Elliott and Lyn Miller-Lachmann

February 6, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Moonwalking is an interesting story about friendship in early 1980s America. The characters are both likable and relatable, and the (SPOILER) not so happy ending, is a nice change of pace from having it “all be okay” and working out in the best possible outcome.  The tone mostly feels realistic (though I am not sure (SPOILER) if Pie sending his address to JJ would have happened). The supporting cast could have been explored a bit more, but what is needed to promote and support the […]

Remarkable author and their remarkable series and the remarkable new one

Remarkably Ruby (Emmie & Friends, #6) by Terri Libenson

February 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Remarkably Ruby (Emmie & Friends, #6) by Terri Libenson continues the characters we have grown to love in the other Emmie & Friends graphic novels. But this time we take a character we have only seen as a running joke (literally as she is usually running to the bathroom) and one I do not remember seeing. Having these two characters who are the narrators not featured in other books was nice. You see the established world of this middle school environment in a new light. And […]

I wish the cat in the below image was mine, but it’s not, so I’ll just keep on reading cat books like Flubby

Flubby Does Not Like the Snow by J. E. Morris

Flubby Will Not Play with That by J. E. Morris

Flubby Will Not Go to Sleep by J. E. Morris

Flubby Does Not Like Valentines’ Day by J. E. Morris

February 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am starting with the title Flubby Does Not Like Valentines’ Day as my first title as it was the first book of the series I read. However, though I am seeing it came out in December, I cannot say for sure as I read these J. E. Morris titles online. I cannot find it located any place for purchase. Therefore, I will just say that it is about Valentine’s Day and how Flubby the Cat is not a fan. Until he is. And that […]

Don’t run with scissors, trip over your chair or jump on the bed or you’ll go extinct too!

How Dinosaurs Went Extinct: A Safety Guide by Ame Dykman

February 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Did you ever wonder how dinosaurs went extinct? Well in How Dinosaurs Went Extinct: A Safety Guide you will learn all the horrible things they did (or did not do) that made them go kaput! Like picking their nose and eating the boogie. Like never changing their underwear. They went extinct because they were not looking both ways. They liked butting things with their heads and not wearing helmets. And they never cleaned their rooms, so they got squished! Wait? You mean that is not […]

It’s the end of the day and I can’t come up with a good title so, here it is….

Remember by Joy Harjo

Jake Makes a World: Jacob Lawrence, a Young Artist in Harlem by Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts

February 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The theme of the review: Cool books you need on your shelves to read. And  CBR15Passport, new to me author(s) (but I know one artist) When you pick up Remember by Joy Harjo you will find a poetic piece of artwork. Michaela Goade adds to this by painting imagery that is bold, bright, deep, romantic, serious, and light. The mixture of the text and illustrations gives a story of family, the individuality, and the authors Mvskoke Nation heritage. It is a celebration of looking around […]

CBR15Passport15, New to me Author Kathy Cremer and friends

A Star for Mama by Ashling Kwok

A Squiggly Line by Robert Vescio

Peanut by Kathy Creamer

Lucky Horse Shoes by Kathy Cremer

February 2, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport, New to me author I could say these books are connected by the fact they are books (a good reason as far as I’m concerned). Or I could say they are connected because they are picture books (better reason). Or I could say they are connected by Kathy Creamer (which is the best as they are). I didn’t know who Creamer was before these books. And between their author and illustrating, I now know they have a bit of a creativeness to them that […]
