When Zafera was Zafera

The Dirt Girl by Jodi Dee

July 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Dirt Girl by Jodi Dee seems familiar.  Maybe I have read it before, or maybe it is just a familiar subject. Either way this book is a solid three as I was not blown away by it, but it was also comfortably enjoyable. When Zafera goes to school for the first time, the children tease her. She is the definition of a “Wild Child of Nature.” Ladybugs and twigs in her hair, dirt on her face and dress. OF course, different means “bad” and […]

If Mr. Fantastic and Captain Marvel were combined

Ms. Marvel, Volume One: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson

July 18, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr14bingo Series Level 1 She might be a superhero with pretty cool powers, but she is still 16 and has a curfew. I have read one other Ms. Marvel graphic novel/comic and was not totally impressed. I think that was because the character in the other book was a kid and Kamala in Ms. Marvel, Volume One: No Normal is a teenager, and somehow being a superhero is more believable to me if you are at least old enough to drive. I had no idea […]

Iheard this was a good book

The Iheards by Emily Kilgore

July 15, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr14bingo Question Level 2   What are The Iheards? Emily Kilgore answers that in their book of the same name. And that was the question I asked myself when I saw the cover, and why I have chosen it for the Question category. Well, first I said, “Well that’s a bright cover. What is it about?” Then I saw, The Iheards. Then I said, “What are the Iheards?” And I assumed they were probably rumors and I was right. It is about the rumors and […]

Rich colors to illustrations and text

A Sky-Blue Bench by Bahram Rahman

July 7, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

First, I will say that this is a darn cute book. Second, I adored this character as some of the things she does I related, too, but also because I like her spunk. And finally, this is a good book so, just go out and read it and do not worry about my review. However, if you want more about A Sky-Blue Bench by Bahram Rahman I will say, this is a story about a young Afghan girl who wants an education. However, it is […]

Curse of the Chosen Volume two: The Will That Shapes the World by Alexis Deacon

June 16, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

WHAT THE FLAMING TORCHES DID I JUST READ? I could probably fill an entire review with comments like the one above for Curse of the Chosen Volume two: The Will That Shapes the World. This graphic novel by Alexis Deacon is just that, graphic in imagery and subject. It is not for the faint of heart, to say the least. The theme is a bit on the clichéd side (the weak overcoming the strong, as they come into their own; plus, the battle between […]

Tiny Monster Big Ol’ Heart

Anzu the Great Kaiju V01 by Benson Shum

June 7, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Looking around for fun reads I found Anzu the Great Kaiju V01. At first, I was not sure if Benson Shum’s creation would be fun, but the cover had potential. And after reading, I decided that yes, Shum’s book was fun. We follow a tiny monster that is a Kaiju. When they come of age, they get their own city to terrorize. Their own city that they can unleash their own, unique, special talent. And Anzu comes from a long line proud monsters. They can […]
