Team seal or team penguin?

Seals are Jerks! by Jared Chapman

August 10, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Seals are Lorelei’s favorite animals. And she loves how they must be the best of friends with penguins. After all, they are always together in all the pictures she sees because of the research she has done. And they are no-shaped, but look like potatoes and their blubber! But when a new student in class tells her that Seals are Jerks! Well, she doesn’t believe it! She needs proof! But she soon learns that seals are jerks. After all, they eat penguins and do not […]

Everybody Has a Body by Molli Jackson Ehlert

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like books about body positivity. And Everybody Has a Body tries to tap into this theme. Now, they tend to run the route of body “neutral” instead of being a true “positivity” book. Molli Jackson Ehlert talks to us in frank terms. You are tall. Or short. Or thin. Or hairy. Or in a wheelchair. Or have a limb difference. Or are bald. Or so much more. There are all types of bodies and they just are. And all these bodies can […]

Don’t judge a book by its cover or an ogre by the crusty toenails

Princess Pru and the Ogre on the Hill by Maureen Fergus

May 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Princess Pru and the Ogre on the Hill was not, my favorite book I read during a picture book marathon. However, it was a book that I enjoyed because it took a familiar theme of, “Don’t judge a book by its cover or an ogre by the crusty toenails” and switched it up a bit. Maureen Fergus’s story is simple, Princess Pru has a great life. She has two overprotective dads, three tarantulas and an ostrich named Orville. But when the ogre moves in next door, […]

One peeved off tornado coming through

I Am a Tornado by Drew Beckmeyer

May 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was doing some Twitter browsing the other day, and found this book, that book, and other (screen shot screen shot screen shot). As the TBR list grew, I saw a happy little tornado and the author/illustrator promoting it (or maybe it was a fan, by that time I had really gotten lost in a sea of books and do not remember). That book was named, I Am a Tornado. Why was Drew Beckmeyer’s book eye catching? Again, a happy (or so it looked like […]

Bee Gees, we got the book

How Deep Is Your Love: A Children's Picture Book (Lyricpop) by Bee Gees

May 9, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read a picture book that is due in February 2024 via online reader copy. And it probably will take me that long to figure out how I feel about this book. At first, I was thinking it would be a good, cute book, after all the cover was nice and bubble gum pink and a dark soft power blue.  Then I read it. Okay, the lyrics are a Bee Gees song, but fairly innocent. Oh wait, that’s a bit mature. Oh, that’s sweet. Well […]

Peace and hair-mony.

The Do-Over V01 by Rodrigo Vargas.

April 17, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I have had a rough few days, and I need to read but thoughts are not sticking, I find that younger/middle reader graphic novels are perfect. I get a fun story, but I do not have to get serious. And with The Do-Over V01 we get a cute story about friends, family, and confidence that has a nice message, but is not “too deep.” Adults might have to suspend belief a tad when it comes to this graphic novel by Rodrigo Vargas. After all, […]
