A Bit Late to the Party on This One, But Still Relevant

April 5, 2018 by Jen K 8 Comments

I have had this book on my iPad forever! Seriously, I think I downloaded it before 13th, the Netflix documentary, was even a development idea. I watched 13th last year, and yet it didn’t spur me to pick this up, but after reading The Hate U Give, this felt like a fitting follow up. I remember being very impressed by 13th, but the nice thing about reading this, is that it really gave me the chance to absorb and contemplate everything, rather than being hit […]

I am 100% here for the messages in this book, but I do not think I am the type of person this book is aimed at. My book club read this for January, and I’m really glad we did! Honestly, I have it on audio, and I will probably re-listen to it every once in a while for a pick-me-up, but I know every time I do, my feelings about how awesome the things she’s saying are will clash with my feelings about the style this book […]

I don’t read enough non-fiction, but this came so highly recommended by the world at large that I didn’t hesitate to pick it up, and man, oh man am I equal parts happy to have read it, and completely ruined by it. Matthew Desmond embedded himself in the slums (if you will) of Milwaukee for a long time, built relationships with a number of people on various sides of the complex polyhedron that is the American landlord/tenant dynamic, and in this book, reports on them […]

How to use food rakes online. And other social media insights on love.

August 8, 2015 by bonnie 1 Comment

When I heard that Aziz Ansari was coming out with a book, I placed a hold in my library catalog IMMEDIATELY. And then I waited FOREVER. I heard during the wait that Modern Romance was not a memoir but an exploration of love and social media. I was intrigued. I mean, there was no way I was not going to read this book. I love me some Aziz, particularly because I love his interpretation of Tom Haverford. So in honor of this auspicious character, Tom […]
