Celebrating and loss

Popi's All Souls Song by C.K. Malone

August 26, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Popi’s All Souls Song by C.K. Malone and illustrated by Shelly Swann is due mid September 2024. I was able to find an online reader copy and I am curious about the final product. I think reading online made me “miss” some important pieces of the story. There is a small bump near the end that did not flow for me. However, overall it is an interesting story that takes a familiar topic (the death of a loved one) and handles it with love, care […]

Garvey’s Choice: The Graphic novel by Nikki Grimes

November 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I am not necessarily a huge fan of Nikki Grimes’ work, I do enjoy most of what I read. And I have thought about reading their novel Garvey’s Choice for a while, yet,  I never got around to it. Then not as long as it has been out, but a while ago, I saved a link to an online reader copy of the graphic novel version, but in typical me style, forgot about it and did not find it again until recently. Which was […]

The real Mary Poppins

Song After Song: The Musical Life of Julie Andrews by Julie Hedlund

May 4, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who has not watched Disney’s 1960s Mary Poppins? Or Sound of Music? And who of us did not want to sing like Julie Andrews? Well, even though it sounds like she popped out of the womb doing these kind of things, her life was anything but simple. First, her mother traveled (she was a piano player) and was away a lot. Second, her parents would divorce, and she would eventually be sent to live with her mother and stepfather in war torn London. And then […]

I’m singing at the bridge, just singing at the bridge, what a glorious feeling to put Vole in my fridge….

Vole and Troll by Iza Trapani

September 27, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Review contains a few spoilers: There is nothing wrong with Vole and Troll the latest picture by Iza Trapani. Trapani is a delightful author and illustrator. The illustrations are cute, detailed and the brightness of each one makes them fun to “read” as well as look at and as fun as reading the actual text. The funky rhyming wording and the clever story make this a fun read-aloud for most ages. I am not a fan of this new take on an old favorite. This […]

Boogie your Wiggle and Wiggle your Boogie

September 8, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

First, I am not a Laurie Berkner fan. Yet, Monster Boogie is a real treat. You do not need the music or a CD of Berkner signing or playing the music for you to enjoy it. As you read out loud you will fall into a natural rhythm of a song. You will love the bounciness to the words and will have fun. Therefore, this is not a before bedtime story. It would be great for a preschool classroom. The illustrations by Ben Clanton are […]

If Douglas Adams knew about ICP…

August 23, 2018 by thewheelbarrow 1 Comment

So, this book was really fun.  It kept popping up as recommended to me and I kept it on the back burner until my good friend called me to say that I had to read it next.  I can’t emphasize enough how important it is that this friend picked up his phone and called me about it.  Not a quick text.  Space Opera necessitated a phone call.  That is about as high a recommendation as I can imagine in 2018.  My friend then told me […]
