Falling in Love with Love, Simon

December 9, 2018 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

I reached out to members of my lady tribe looking for an uplifting read after the awful heartbreak that was The Radium Girls and one of my friends recommended YA in general, and Becky Albertalli specifically. I don’t read a lot of YA though I have enjoyed my share of John Green and Rainbow Rowell, so I figured I was on the right track. My pal did not disappoint. This book was a warm smile and a fluffy embrace and just what I needed. Simon […]

Surprisingly, This is Not for the “Book is Better” Square

August 1, 2018 by Jen K 4 Comments

Bingo Square: Home, Something, Home I started watching the movie adaptation of this on a recent plane trip, and only realized once I was further into it, that Love, Simon was based on the novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, an often reviewed novel on Cannonball Read. My main motivation for starting the movie is that I quite liked the lead actor in Everything, Everything (I like that both the lead actors in that movie are basically working their way through YA film adaptions […]

Maybe it’s a holy freaking huge awesome deal

I am not a quick reader, but I blazed through Becky Albertalli’s Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda in one sitting. I haven’t seen the movie yet and didn’t know much about the book before I saw it while browsing bookstores on a recent trip, but I’m really glad I read it. The story begins as teenage Simon is blackmailed by a fellow student who inadvertently read Simon’s email exchange with another boy Simon knows only as Blue. They’re both closeted and want to keep […]

Adorable Book is Adorable

November 28, 2017 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Confession: I bought this book a year ago. Exactly a year ago today. Thanks Amazon! When I have the $ and Amazon is having one of their sales (a year ago it was Black Friday), I buy a bunch of books, forget I have them, and then rediscover them when I’m looking for something to read. I do love my Kindle. This book was just adorable. Other confession: I read the last two pages after I read the first page, so I always knew Blue’s […]

A lovely, heartwarming story about first loves. And an amazing opening sentence about peeing mermaids.

I’m joining in with the praise for Becky Albertalli’s follow-up to the great Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. And I’m adding Becky Albertalli to the YA Mount Rushmore, along with Rainbow, Andrew, and AS. She writes teens that seem like actual human beings, who talk like regular kids, and who make realistic mistakes. These kids are full of self-doubt and have families that embarrass them, but are also hopeful and fiercely loyal to those aforementioned embarrassing families. These kids could be living next door to me. […]

This book was SO MUCH FUN. I want to read it again.

February 25, 2017 by narfna 6 Comments

I started this book at lunch yesterday, got sixty pages in, and then read the rest of it in a frenzy as soon as I got home from work. I even forgot to eat dinner. Guys, I NEVER forget to eat dinner. I’m thinking about what I’m going to eat for dinner immediately after lunch is over. Sometimes lunch the day before. I mean, I did eventually remember to eat, but only after I finished the book around 8:30. Only the really good books make […]
