Last Bingo, # 8: More Rowell

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

October 31, 2019 by Ale 2 Comments

I blame faintingviolet (and crystalclear) for my new obsession with everything Rowell. I was so happily ignorant before cracking one of her books, but now I’m like an addict and I can’t get enough. I haven’t suffered from book-hangover in a very long time, but Wayward Son has me moping around wondering when book 3 is going to hit the shelves. I don’t know what to read next, I have a stack from the library that I’m sending back because everything is just paling in comparison […]

3 Heads are Definitely Better Than 2

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

October 30, 2019 by Ale 1 Comment

Please enjoy our joint effort in unpacking the amazing Carry On! Ale: I very much enjoy that Rainbow Rowell did the most meta thing ever and basically wrote a fan-fic about her own characters that were characters in a fan-fic created by her own characters. I’m still wrapping my own brain around that sentence. But I think it’s a testament to her craft that she had characters that were so nuanced from Fangirl that she could expand them into another two books (note from faintingviolet – […]

Beasts of jargon.

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

October 29, 2019 by Leedock 2 Comments

Let’s face it. If Rainbow Rowell wrote the instructions on the back of a box of oatmeal, I would read it. Many Cannonballers understand exactly what I’m saying and I have to thank their rave reviews from the early days for introducing her to me. “Fangirl,” in particular, is one of my favorite books. Rowell captures what it’s like to be a college freshman: starting at square one, trying to make new friends, and figuring out who you are. The main character in that novel, […]

There isn’t really peace when you are done

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

October 19, 2019 by Malin 2 Comments

4.5 stars Spoiler warning! This is the second book in a series, and this review will contain spoilers for the first book, Carry On. If you haven’t already read it, you should do yourself a favour and do so. Simon Snow was the Chosen One, destined to bring an end to the threat to all magic. Of course, it turned out that he himself was in fact the thing that was threatening the magic in the first place, and his mentor/father figure (and actual biological father, although none […]

I Thought Supernatural Had Exclusive Rights to that Kansas Song by Now

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

September 28, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

It’s been almost a year since the events of Carry On, and things aren’t alright.  Agatha was so fed up with magical quests and adventures that she is attending school in San Diego and left even her wand behind.  Simon, Baz and Penelope Bunce are living together, attending university, except that Simon isn’t exactly going or leaving the couch much at all these days. How does one move on with life after accomplishing the thing one was chosen to do?  How to deal with all […]

Look at where you are. Look at where you started. The fact that you’re alive is a miracle.

It seems silly to try to summarize this novel. For a couple of reasons. One, because it’s a story that’s based on a fictional character from another fictional novel (meaning it’s a story made up by a character in a made up story). Two, because everyone who is familiar with Rainbow Rowell, and particularly her novel, Fangirl, already knows all about this novel so trying to describe it feels totally unnecessary. Especially given how many words have already been spilled all over the internet about […]
