Yo Ho Ho and Treasure

Danger in the Deep Sea (2) (OceanX Adventures) by Kate B. Jerome

July 31, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Kate B. Jerome has a series dealing with the OceanX expeditions, and book two is Danger in the Deep Sea (2) (OceanX Adventures). As an 8 to (young-medium) 12-year-old I would have devoured this book/series. I did not realize this was book two when I “picked up” the online reader copy. And while it can be a stand-alone read, it probably would have helped to read book one first. The adventures of the story are unbelievable, yet, probably plausible. Our main character is a treasure […]

I like to eat, read books, and read books about eating

Bring Back the Babka! by Marilyn Wolpin

Rising by Sidura Ludwig

July 27, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am always hungry. I was hungry when I read these books and writing reviews for them made me hungry.  And while you may or may not be able to devour good food, soon you will be able to devour Bring Back the Babka! (I was able to read a special finished copy provided to me by my lovely Barefoot Books deal!) And 2024 will show us my other read of food, glorious food! When brothers search for their mother’s missing babka in Bring Back […]

Hello The Wilderness

The Wilderness by Steve McCarthy

July 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It is The Wilderness and our young character, Oktober Vasylenko, does not like it. The other siblings and his parents do, but he’d rather read about adventures. After all there are monsters, and bugs, and all sorts of stuff. Like The Wilderness itself. It is not a nice creature. Or is it? The father of Oktober tells him that sometimes he too is scared, but that is just what you feel, but bravery is what you do. And in an accident, Oktober is separated from […]

Enlighten Me by Minh Lê

July 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Enlighten Me is a mindfulness/meditation graphic novel for the 10 and up crowd. There is a little bit of a social theme added with the racism the school bully directs towards the narrator, but the idea is how to deal with the emotions and a situation that triggers and not necessarily this particular situation. The entire book is mostly in “thought bubbles” as the narrator and his family are at a silent retreat, and therefore, unable to talk once there. But to allow the teachings of […]

I challenge you to a duel

Duel by Jessixa Bagley

July 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read several graphic novels recently with diverse, modern casts. One of them, Duel by Jessixa Bagley, left me with two things. The first was I was not sure about a couple characters. I read Duel via a physical reader copy and the images were not complete (some were sketches, not fully fleshed out and color was not added). Though  I was enjoying Aaron Bagley’s expressive artwork when we were able to see a larger image. There are hair-raising moments, images of the fencing, the […]

Living up to your infamous family heritage

Shelley Frankenstein! V01 CowPiggy by Colleen Madden

July 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you want a book where your main character has a “loud personality” and is a big sister, and is a person who does not realize that people do not like to be scared (not even a little bit) most of the time (if not all the time)? Then you probably want to read the graphic novel, Shelley Frankenstein! V01 CowPiggy by Colleen Madden. There is a cute sister/brother relationship, and the historical aspect is amusing (yes, THOSE Frankenstein’s are the ancestors of Shelley and […]
