Black and White and Technicolor

Kafka by Nishioka Kyoudai, David Yang

Goblin Mode Guide to Life: Embrace Your Feral Side and Thrive in Imperfection by Editors of Chartwell Books

November 9, 2023 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Kafka – 3.5 stars Nine of Franz Kafka’s surreal and unsettling short stories are adapted into manga form, including both well-known works and less prominent ones among the collection. Like the creators of this book, I didn’t really “get” The Metamorphosis when I first read it. Something about the detail of the killer apple made me snort with laughter – but then my impulse in uneasy situations is generally maniacal giggling so I’m not sure how much that says. Unlike the creators of this book, I am […]

The Winter of Our Discontent

Bliss Montage by Ling Ma

October 8, 2023 by Pooja Leave a Comment

In Bliss Montage, a woman and her family live in the same house as her one hundred ex-boyfriends, women trapped in a toxic friendship take a drug that makes themselves invisible, and a pregnant woman must caretake the protruding arm of her fetus as she awaits giving birth to the rest of it. The distance from everyday life that fantasy brings us can be used to magnify reality, and Ling Ma takes takes ample advantage of this in Bliss Montage, a short story collection that examines […]

Excellent short story collection

Walking on Cowrie Shells: Stories by Nana Nkweti

October 5, 2023 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

CBR15bingo Africa This book was a finalist for the Caine Prize for African writing  This 2021 collection of 10 short stories, Nana Nkweti’s debut work, is a riveting read. Each story is thought provoking, some are shocking, all are brilliantly written. This is the kind of book you could read quickly but it deserves to be savored.  Nana Nkweti is a Cameroonian American writer, and her stories focus on the experience of being a “hyphenated American.” For some who have come to the US from […]

The night of all nights

Night of Lyons by Chasity Bowlin, Ruth A. Casie, Lynne Connolly, Sandra Sookoo, C.H. Admirand, Sara Adrien, Belle Ami, Abigail Bridges, Jenna Jaxon, Aurrora St. James

October 3, 2023 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Many a Regency hero and heroine will meet their match at the masquerade ball held tonight in the Lyon’s Den, an infamous gambling hall. A Lyon With No Name (Chasity Bowlin) This was a solid start to the collection, with the tried-and-true pairing of wickedness and innocence being refreshed by William’s awareness that he must pull his affairs together for Ellie and his estate’s sake. The Lady and the Lyon’s Scandal (Ruth A. Casie) Eva is a clever character, and I enjoyed how she and […]

Connecting stories and people through music

Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall by Kazuo Ishiguro

September 17, 2023 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR15 BINGO: On the Air, because these are all stories about music BINGO: Sex, On the Air, Nostalgia, Picture This, Europe Music has always been a complete mystery to me. I was born with zero musical talent, and the idea of creating a new tune out of nothing is so incomprehensible to me, it’s nothing short of magic. I’ll never be someone who can analyze music or discuss musical theory, yet I often find myself in awe when a song or a chord evokes ecstasy, […]

Scattered Showers by Rainbow Rowell

April 17, 2023 by Leedock Leave a Comment

I’m waiting for Rowell to send another satisfyingly awkward love story (without magic and told mostly with words and not pictures) out into the world. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the Simon Snow books. I also enjoyed Pumpkinhead even though graphic novels really aren’t my thing. But, I yearn for books like Eleanor and Park and Fangirl and Attachments. So, I attempted to scratch that itch with this set of short stories. I had read a couple of these in other collections […]
