“I try not to expect people to be who I wish them to be, rather than who they are.” (Bingo #2)

A Conspiracy in Belgravia (Lady Sherlock #2) by Sherry Thomas

September 21, 2019 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

In setting up the prompts for our Sherlock Retellings Book Club I realized one of the parameters I use when deciding if something is a good retelling or remix: a good retelling for its own sake, needs to have enough of the original’s connective tissue without feeling like it’s been made using tracing paper. In the Lady Sherlock series Sherry Thomas split the various characteristics across several characters and I think it worked really well to not have direct analogs for the most part. Its […]

It’s Always the Husband, Right?

The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas

September 8, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I was in the minority of people that didn’t like the second novel in this series as much as the second. I thought it got a bit more convoluted than necessary, leaving me scratching my head rather than marveling at the way everything came together in the end.  I was pleasantly surprised with the third novel, and how much I enjoyed it, and I think it’s because it stayed focused on the core characters I already liked rather than introducing a series of new people […]

No, her name ain’t baby, it’s Charlotte. Sherlock Holmes if you’re nasty!

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas

Cbr11bingo Remix This remix of Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet is clever and ingenious. It’s a fun read with interesting and sympathetic characters, most notably a female Sherlock Holmes. Sherry Thomas does an amazing job of reimagining this classic. Those familiar with Doyle’s first Holmes mystery will recognize certain traits of Sherlock and plot points in common, but this is a story with something original to say about women, class, justice and independence. It’s also a fine mystery. Charlotte Holmes is about 25 […]

The Second Lady Sherlock Novel

A Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas

June 22, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I’m afraid I’ve fallen into yet another book series, and I’m already behind. A Conspiracy in Belgravia (2017) is the second book in The Lady Sherlock Series by Sherry Thomas. It looks like there are now four books in this series. I’m not sure if more are planned, or how many there will be in total. I read the first book, A Study in Scarlet Women, when I saw it on NPR’s List of Best Books. I loved how it began with Charlotte casually and strategically giving up […]

I would like the next one to be released ASAP, please?

The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas

May 7, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is book 3 in an ongoing series. For those who prefer to go into a series completely unspoiled, this review will probably reveal details about the earlier books in the series. The story will also make a lot more sense if you start at the beginning, with A Study in Scarlet Women.  From Goodreads: Under the cover of “Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective,” Charlotte Holmes puts her extraordinary powers of deduction to good use. Aided by the capable Mrs. Watson, Charlotte draws those in need […]

The continuing adventures of Lady Sherlock

A Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas

April 25, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

This is the second book in a series. While it can be read independently, and probably makes sense on its own, you’d be better off starting with book one, A Study in Scarlet Women.  From Goodreads: Being shunned by Society gives Charlotte Holmes the time and freedom to put her extraordinary powers of deduction to good use. As “Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective,” aided by the capable Mrs. Watson, she’s had great success helping with all manner of enquiries, but she’s not prepared for the new client […]
