Miss Moriarty, I Presume? Cover

Lady Charlotte Holmes continues to be delightful

Miss Moriarty, I Presume? by Sherry Thomas

November 30, 2021 by wicherwill 2 Comments

Sherlock Holmes, as conceived by Arthur Conan Doyle, lasted forever and ever through both short stories and novels, and even one death. It’s definitely a fervent wish of mine that this series does something similar, although (like Doyle) I imagine Thomas will at some point get frustrated with the series… Our formidable Charlotte is at it again, but this time up against an enemy too deadly to underestimate. Moriarty himself has come to visit, with a seemingly thoughtful, heart wrenching request–his only daughter has sequestered […]

Had his retinas not been seared by the Christmas tree dress, her dinner gown would have been the most outlandish thing he witnessed today.

CBR BINGO: Free! Square (Library Book) Huzzah! It’s BINGO season. The most wonderful time of the year! Man. I love these books. This is the fifth book in Thomas’ Lady Sherlock Series. It’s a gift that keeps giving when you really fall in love with a group of characters that inhabit a book series. As always, if you haven’t read ’em, what are you waiting for? As this is the fifth book in the series, spoilers inevitably follow. In this installment, Charlotte and her posse are back […]

Two tales of Charlotte

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro

Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas

February 14, 2021 by Catticus Finch 1 Comment

I finished reading these two books recently, and since they shared a common named protagonist, it seemed like a no brainer to review them together.  Both of these feature Charlotte Holmes, solver of mysteries, but in very different settings. Book:  A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro “The two of us, we’re the best kind of disaster. Apples and oranges. Well, more like apples and machetes.”  There are many iterations and retelling of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson out there these days.  This one is […]

Lady Charlotte Holmes investigates closer to home

Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas

December 4, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is the fifth book in an ongoing series, and as such, this review may and probably will contain spoilers for earlier books. If you’re not caught up, go start at the beginning, with A Study in Scarlet Women.    Official book description: Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes’s friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited.   Rumours fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed […]

She really is smarter than everyone else

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas

September 28, 2020 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

I have recommended A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas to nearly everyone it feels like. It seems very appropriate to review it for the Gateway CBR12 bingo square. I started reading it last year for Cannon Book Club, but never went back to finish. So I went in fresh with the audiobook to jumpstart my brain and finally finish my paperback copy. Charlotte Holmes is a clever woman who is smarter than almost everyone she meets. All she wants is independence to do […]

A satisfying heroine; not Sherlock Holmes

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas

August 15, 2020 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

CBR12 BINGO: Red A Study in Scarlet Women has been on my radar since last year’s “Classics and Retellings” book club, when a number of Cannonballers reviewed it as an adaptation/retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous work. I was excited that CBR12 BINGO gave me an excuse to pick it up from my library. My enthusiasm arc for this novel can be visualized as a bell curve: I went from “hmm, ok but. . .,” to “wow, this is great!” back down to “mildly positive” […]
