Hey guys, only like 10 more reviews to write!!!! [sob] We won’t talk about the stack of grading or the article revision due next week now, will we? No, we will not. Let’s talk some Sherlock instead. I had read this novel many years ago, and I didn’t remember much of anything about it. I’m afraid to say that a similar impression stands now after a re-read. Granted, it’s been awhile since I read this (I think? Honestly, I have no idea anymore, guys. I’ll […]
The Game is Afoot! (for the first time)
In going through the Books on My Shelf, I realized that while I own the complete Sherlock Holmes mystery collection, I have not finished reading it. So, there will be several reviews of the series over the next several weeks. And, if you’re lucky and I’m not feeling lazy, there miiiiiight be Sherlock gifs. If you’ve ever wondered how Sherlock Holmes got to be Sherlock Holmes, well…this isn’t exactly that story. BUT we do find out how Sherlock and John Watson meet and form their […]
The game is afoot
3.5 stars. A Study in Charlotte is a pretty genius take on the Sherlock Holmes stories. It’s a modern-day retelling which we’ve seen before, but Cavallaro sets her characters in high school and makes them descendants of the real life Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Making them descendants is such a smart move because Jamie and Charlotte can share traits with their predecessors, but they aren’t glued to them. They can have their own adventures and personalities. Also, three cheers for a female Sherlock. She’s […]
Book exchange goodies from MsWas!
Received a happy surprise when I got home from work today. I read the first book in this series this year for CBR7 and loved it. I’m so excited I have the next three all ready to go for CBR8. Thank you so much, MsWas!!! You’re the best 🙂 (P.S. I am obsessed with these covers. I wish they had continued making the series with them instead of the ones they do now. They’re so purty.)
A study in scarlet evening gowns
I added this book to my list following some CBR recommendations, and picked it up last night when I wanted something new and light. Yup, bought it last night, writing a review this morning. So obviously, this was a quick read, but lots of fun nonetheless. This book was in the YA section, but it was blessedly free of a dystopian future, an epic love story, and whiny teenagers for a change. Obvious things first, Jackaby is basically Sherlock. It’s mentioned in every review or […]
The game is always afoot!
I grew up reading Sherlock Holmes adventure stories. I immersed myself in the short stories and novels alike, and I delighted in the adaptations, particularly the episode of Wishbone that adapted The Hound of the Baskervilles (to date, my favorite Holmes novel). So I am always curious/suspicious when someone not-the-author writes a spinoff or adaptation of a popular and beloved author’s work (see: admirers or sycophants of Jane Austen). But when my friend K offered to lend her copy of Anthony Horowitz’s take, The House […]
