I want to say I excpect more from Gaiman, except when it comes to his short stories I don’t really.

January 10, 2017 by melanir 2 Comments

Trigger Warnings is a collection of short stories by Neil Gaiman, I believe his third collection. It’s a pretty meh collection, practically all of the stories were forgotten the moment I turned the page. I find this to be true of most of his short stories if I’m honest, I like (and occasionally love) his novels, but his short stories generally leave me cold. That this collection is so bland is rather ironic considering the tittle. Before I get into the actual stories, I do […]

Move over Sherlock Holmes

December 30, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

3.5 stars. This was a good, solid mystery book. In a way, it’s Sherlock Holmes fanfiction reclaiming the original series for women (in a similar way that Elementary the tv series functions). Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories are classics for a reason, but the casual sexism is undeniable and for a modern reader like myself, it can be hard to swallow, “the woman” Irene Adler or no. The Beekeeper’s apprentice examines what it would be like if an older Sherlock had a female protege. Holmes meets […]

A Fun Holmes Version

December 27, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I like the story and the characters in A Study in Charlotte. What does irritate me a little bit is how in this version of the Conan Doyle universe, the Watson and Holmes families are expected to keep their famous characteristics and relationships through each generation. Jamie Watson can’t wait to meet his Holmes counterpart Charlotte, because he hopes they will develop a close relationship like their ancestors Sherlock and John. When you try to break away from that established characterization, things will go horribly […]

Charlies’ Angels with Sherlock Holmes at Phantom of the Opera

December 27, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The premise of Angels of Music is cool: the Phantom of the Opera runs a secret detective service and employs ladies of the opera house as “Angels”. The set up reminiscent of Charlie’s Angels is pretty deliberate. There are several actual characters from the original novella by Gaston Leroux but in different forms. Christine Daee is one of the original Angels, and there is also a Raoul, but no Philippe, and a Count de Chagny. Where things get a little weird is that mix of […]

The Final (Sherlock Holmes) Countdown

July 5, 2016 by bonnie 1 Comment

All right, folks. I’ve finally reached the end—the last of the Sherlock Holmes mystery collections! I’m excited to have made my collection complete. I don’t know if I’ll need to go through a re-read of the entire series again, though I definitely have favorite stories I’ll want to revisit. I’ve definitely decided NOT to go through with the Anthony Horowitz adaptations, but I WILL be giving the Mary Russell books a try. And I definitely need to rewatch some Sherlock after this. As always, I […]

The penultimate Sherlock story extravaganza

July 5, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I’m winding down to a close with the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Thanks to the hints and clues dropped in His Last Bow, I think I would enjoy the Mary Russell mysteries. The idea of Holmes beekeeping initially seems like kind of a cop-out on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s part, but Laurie R. King seems to have taken the idea and turned into something interesting and provocative. Anyway: back to this collection. I thought there were some strong adventures here, and it seems like Doyle knew […]
