I don’t know what the excitement is all about. It’s not like sharks attack people or anything….

I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916: A Graphix Book by Lauren Tarshis and adapted by Georgia Ball

December 11, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I set myself two goals this year. One was to read a book a day (it averages out to that, but I actually didn’t read a book every day), and the second was to do 12 Cannonballs. As of this review I have 26 books to go… We’ll see! So, one of the ways I was trying to read a book a day was to do simple books. Not books that were simplistic (See Jane. See Dick. See Dick and Jane), but easier reads, fun […]

Does a mama shark tell her kiddo to wait 30 minutes before swimming?

Mother of Sharks by Melissa Cristina Marquez

September 28, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was lucky and recently had Mother of Sharks by Melissa Cristina Marquez fall into my lap (well, in my hands). Not due until late May/early June 2023, Marquez’s story is one we all need to know as it is not just about a woman, or a woman of color, or about science, or the ocean. It is all of that and a fun book to boot. Taking fiction and fact, she tells her story through the eyes of a young girl. We do not […]

My name is Sunny & my story is on da money!

Surviving the Wild: Sunny the Shark by Remy Lai

July 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I adored the Surviving the Wild first two books about a koala and elephant. And Surviving the Wild: Sunny the Shark is another cute story of Surviving the Wild series. This time we explore how one shark makes friends, learns about humans and their trash. And while Sunny is getting in and out of trouble, we learn about the type of shark Sunny is, the fish that are helpful to them, and yes, our human trash and the problems it causes. The pacing of this […]

Exploring the world on the pages of these books

Fabien Cousteau Expeditions Deep Into the Amazon Jungle by Fabien Cousteau

Fabien Cousteau Expeditions Great White Shark Adventure by Fabien Cousteau

July 13, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

After a little research, I realized that one of the issues I was having with the Fabien Cousteau Expeditions book of exploring the Hawaiian ocean (the seemingly humble brags of Cousteau himself) was that it was the fourth book in the series, and it was recapping the previous stories. In Deep Into the Amazon Jungle by James O. Fraioli and Fabien Cousteau, this issue comes up when mentioning his Artic adventures (book two) but it felt less “braggy.” (Book one is Great White Shark Adventure […]

Who Would Win?

Ultimate Bug Rumble by Jerry Pallotta

Jaguar vs. Skunk by Jerry Pallotta

Killer Whale vs Great White Shark by Jerry Pallotta

Rhino vs. Hippo by Jerry Pallotta

October 13, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have reviewed others in the Who Would Win? Series. This time around I found four titles that had a few animals you do not normally see in a children’s book as well as surprise upsets in the battle of the best. Each book gives facts, oddities and quirky information about each bug, mammal, or fish. A solid argument is given to why the author thinks the one that wins would win. All the facts are in front of you; and therefore, you can make […]

“But if you could tell science like a story, I’d pay attention.”

The Line Tender by Kate Allen

February 12, 2020 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Lucy’s mother was a marine biologist who was particularly interested in sharks. People told her mother that this enthusiasm would get her killed, but it was a brain aneurysm that ended up taking her life. Lucy was seven when that happened, and while she still finds herself occasionally swept up in bouts of grief, she and her father are getting by. Friends and neighbors help a lot. Fred from across the street is her best friend, though now at 13 years old, she is beginning […]
