Christopher Moore is always a good option for alleviating pandemic stress

Shakespeare for Squirrels by Christopher Moore

Many people have asked recently for reading recommendations for when you are just too stressed or tired to focus well. I’m not a social scientist, but I suspect the pandemic has something to do with the intense fatigue everyone is feeling, even when it comes to indulging in the joy of reading. Fortunately, Christopher Moore continues to write during these gloomy times. While every novel of his isn’t necessarily a winner, you can absolutely count on Moore to provide a pleasant diversion, even if the […]

“Here is a Story I Have Heard”

The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie

July 1, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I read (and enjoyed) Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy last (Ancillary Justice, the first was particularly amazing) so I was surprised to see she had written a fantasy novel.  I enjoy both genres, and I know it isn’t unheard of for authors to switch between genres, but the Radch trilogy had AI and space travel … so definitely what I would consider on the harder side of sci-fi.  The novel’s description was a bit vague so I was very pleasantly surprised when I realized that […]

Shakespearean satire. Not my favorite, but not Moore’s fault – he rules.

September 1, 2017 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

Christopher Moore is one of my top five favorite authors. I first discovered him when I read “Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal,” the imaginative and satirical fictional account of the life of Jesus Christ, the years that are missing from the Bible.  It’s actually my favorite book, which I will disclose depending on the audience.  (If I don’t think they’ll have the sense of awareness to appreciate it, then I go with 1984, which is a close second). I reread his […]

Miranda and Caliban – what came before the tempest

March 20, 2017 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

Jacqueline Carey has been one of my favorite authors for almost 16 years now, since the publishing of her first novel, “Kushiel’s Dart”.  Full disclosure; I am a full on fan girl who named my eldest daughter after one of Jacqueline’s characters.  I always get excited when she shares on her blog her current writing project.  In 2015 she announced that she had written a new book that would be a retelling of “The Tempest” but told from Miranda and Caliban’s perspective.  However, due to […]
