Silly questions, awkward clichés, trials of life, and other stuff

Queer Chameleon and Friends by Amee Wilson

September 25, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I might have seen Amee Wilson’s work online, after all the colorful chameleon icon is a bit hard to miss. However, I am not as familiar as I probably should be.  Therefore, when I found Queer Chameleon and Friends I was both interested in and a little leery as books that have this message can sometimes be a bit pushy. Yet, why not start it? After all, I was under no obligation to finish it. And I was put at ease with Wilson’s introduction. That might […]

An anti-macho vigilante in tight panther leggings

The Amazing Camel Toe by Claire Duplan

December 26, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

“Constance, a modern, young illustrator, takes revenge for the thousands of attacks suffered daily by women with a comic of her own, titled The Amazing Camel Toe, celebrating the adventures of an anti-macho vigilante in tight, panther leggings” And Claire Duplan gives life to this SuperWoman. This package of Womanhood and Badassery! The Amazing Camel Toe is a graphic novel that is about “the worst of the punks.” Constance made her heroine to be a better version of herself. More confident, more able to stand […]

Get my rocker, Gert….I’m officially old

Warm Blood by Josh Tierney

November 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Looking for a new graphic novel? Skip Warm Blood by Josh Tierney. What I thought was going to be a murder mystery with a main character that was less Nancy Drew and more an everyday girl trying to make it through high school algebra turned into an odd collection of stories connected by a girl called Penny. Every single page has some bizarre events. Even if it is just a normal thing like trying on clothes at the mall. But the most bizarre event? The […]

Dear Kelsey Wroten

Cannonball by Kelsey Wroten

December 9, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Dear Kelsey Wroten, I am sure you are a lovely person. I am sure we could have some interesting conversations about not only your graphic novel, Cannonball, but about life itself. Who has not felt like your main character, Caroline Bertram? Who has not loathed the joys of adulting when you are not ready for it? Then again, are any of us ever ready for it? And of course, Caroline has the added struggles of being queer, a writer and being a drug-addled alcoholic. But […]

A new meaning to he’s got the Midas Touch

Midas Flesh Volume 1 by Ryan North

December 4, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I started Midas by Ryan North after finishing Pandora’s Legacy by Kara Leopard (review a few reviews before this). I was not paying attention to the Greek Myth theme that both graphic novels had (though to be honest, I should have as the titles are a large clue). Once I realized this, I thought maybe they would be good companion novels. They are not. Where as Pandora’s Legacy could go as young as 10-13 and adult, I would start with at least 13 and more […]

Sam Sax….Is where it is at? Or not…..Take your pick….

December 21, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What the hell did I just read? Sam Sax, as mentioned before, can write. And can write well. However, he is not easy to read. Please forgive me when I say I am not sure of one fact: Does Sax hate himself because he is gay, or does he just want to shock you? After all, you cannot slut shame, even a male, right? And yes, he likes sex. A lot. He likes to write poems about Butt Holes and Butt Plugs. And about how […]
