Unquestionably the worst month in the calendar. Red Cat*** It’s not the writer’s fault that I just finished Robert Kolker’s excellent Lost Girls in light of the apprehension of the man they think is the Gilgo Beach murderer. But my threshold for murdered sex workers was low going into this. I only finished it because it filled a specific square for my library summer reading game. It’s not bad; the mystery is done well but it doesn’t stand out as far as the rest of […]

Nice illustrations and wisdom to help calm the mind

Big Panda and Tiny Dragon by James Norbury

CBR 15 BINGO: Guide, because this is a guide for calm. (The dedication reads, “This book is dedicated to everyone who gets lost.”) I was given a copy of Big Panda and Tiny Dragon for Christmas last year, and I opened it with some trepidation. My last foray into self-help territory didn’t go well, if you recall. However, I was pretty sure I could at least finish this one, given that it includes cute pictures of a panda and a tiny dragon. Self-help isn’t really […]

The Only Self Help Book I’ve Ever Recommended

how to keep house while drowning by kc davis

July 5, 2023 by KatSings 5 Comments

Hello and welcome back to me! I haven’t reviewed a book since March of 2021, so you know this book was really something if it finally got me back on here and posting. It isn’t enough to simply recommend to my IRL friends, I need to share the joy of it over CBR, too. I also bought a physical copy of my own to access whenever I need it. A little understanding of me – I hate self help books. I’m thrilled they help […]

“Everything you do matters. Act Accordingly.”

The Pocket Guide to Action by Kyle Eschenroeder

June 17, 2023 by Halbs Leave a Comment

A friend gave me this book years ago, but this season of life was the right time to finally pick it up. It goes so well with Dr. Neil Fiore’s The Now Habit and a recent New York Times article by Dana Smith called “How to Save Yourself from Task Paralysis.” All three of these pieces consider the importance of action to our happiness, mental health, and to our goals. How we frame action and our action’s results can help us get moving (metaphorically or […]

How to still give a fuck without tearing yourself to shreds in the process

The Art of Extreme Self-Care by Cheryl Richardson

June 4, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

“Remember, if you’re going to disappoint people the right way, the idea is to tell the truth with respect and care, not manage their emotions. While you can’t control how someone feels or how they react, you can control how you feel and how you choose to make your point. Don’t measure your success by the response you receive. Measure it by how you feel once your anxiety disappears.” Work over the past nine months has been extremely stressful for me. I’ve started therapy again […]

Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village by Jay Cooper and Maureen Johnson

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth

A Psalm for the Wild-built by Becky Chambers

December 4, 2022 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village by Jay Cooper and Maureen Johnson I got about halfway through this book. The gist is that, in a Quaint English Village, everything and everyone is out to murder you. The first few chapters made me chuckle. I skimmed the rest. There are some quizzes to see if you are paying attention. For me, the novelty wore off after the first one. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson I […]
