Over the last three months, I’ve been trying to get my life in order, throwing out the things I don’t want/like/need, part middle-aged decluttering and part long-term strategy to go on offense against depression. I’ve already given up alcohol, caffeine, and sweets. My next target: mindless phone use. So when Lollygagger mentioned How to Break Up with Your Phone in a Pajiba comment, I knew it was going to the top of my BUY IT NOW list. She reviewed it here on CBR the day […]
Self Help that is mostly helpful with a touch of Goop-ness
I presently work at Northwestern University, in the Career Management Center of Kellogg School of Management. As such, I have access to neat personal and professional development opportunities. Kellogg yearly holds a day-long conference called “Kellogg on Growth,” and staff are able to attend this thoughtful and exciting day of learning, reflection, and intellectual discourse. Mallika Chopra was the keynote speaker at Kellogg on Growth this year, so my interest was thus piqued in her book. I have obviously heard of her papa, Deepak, but […]
Liked it, wanted more.
I am 100% here for the messages in this book, but I do not think I am the type of person this book is aimed at. My book club read this for January, and I’m really glad we did! Honestly, I have it on audio, and I will probably re-listen to it every once in a while for a pick-me-up, but I know every time I do, my feelings about how awesome the things she’s saying are will clash with my feelings about the style this book […]
New Package, Same Stuff

Since not all the readers of my blog are necessarily also readers here on the group blog or my friends on Facebook, you may not know that I am currently in the process of growing a tiny human inside me. This comes after more than seven years of trying to get pregnant and nearly two emotionally taxing and occasionally very depressing years where every few months I went through time consuming, expensive and at times really rather painful IVF treatments. So I worked HARD for […]
The strangeness detracts from the usefulness.
So. KonMari. I think most of us are at least passingly familiar with it, since the word is a verb now, as in “I KonMari’d so thoroughly last weekend, I donated my husband to Goodwill.” I have some thoughts. The first is that the basic philosophy behind the method – don’t keep anything in your home that doesn’t spark joy – is slightly flawed but extremely useful. She touches on it many times, but I still found the “rules” a little murky on things that […]
