don Miguel Ruiz Say Relax

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

November 11, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Adriene Mishler of Yoga with Adriene fame directed me to this book, as it was on her suggested reading list. Because I want to be her I gave it a go. (That’s also how I found the previously-reviewed The Tree of Yoga). In The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz passes along what he refers to as centuries-old Toltec wisdom. I’m not versed enough to know whether or not that is accurate, but I figured if this book has been a best-seller for a decade there […]

Spring has sprung, time to make some magic

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo

September 19, 2019 by Caesar's Wife 2 Comments

It seems like serendipity that I should happen to finish Marie Kondo’s well-known 2014 guide to tidying up at the commencement of Spring here in the southern hemisphere.  I’ve been reading Kondo’s book on my bus to work (whenever I’m lucky enough to get a seat, that is), and have found it a delightful way to spend my commute. Almost everything about her book feels tidy, positive, and peaceful. I’m genuinely inspired to start my chattel cleanse. Her method now is extremely well-known – only […]

It’s official: I suck.

On Being Awesome: A Unified Theory of How Not to Suck by Nick Riggle

September 11, 2019 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Up until reading Riggle’s book, I viewed each day of a series of choices. I choose whether to go for a run or snooze my alarm, I choose whether to have toast or cereal for breakfast, I choose my (hopefully tasteful) office-attire and whether to wear the impractical pumps or the comfy crocs. That’s a universal experience. But as soon as I interact with another human being, I have not thought about the choices that follow those interactions. I, like most capital-city dwelling sheeple, know […]

Principled Negotiation

Getting to Yes by Roger Fisher

August 26, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

This one was pretty technical. The authors really break down the thought process of having a principled negotiation instead of trying to negotiate either “soft” or “hard.” They provide a variety of examples/case studies that emphasize the point. Not going to lie, this was a bit dry, but very good book if you want to read more about different leadership styles. “Getting to Yes” breaks down key concepts from the authors such as “Don’t Bargain Over Positions,” “Separate the People from the Problem” and “Focus […]

Helping Others Leads to Success

Give and Take by Adam Grant

August 26, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I hope you don’t get too sick of me posting reviews of books I had to complete for my course. I really did enjoy this one a lot. It had a lot of interesting facts and data/examples to show why helping others leads to win/win. It’s hard out there if you are a manager and you have employees or bosses that are set to win and they want to make sure that you lose. Heck, I have to deal with agency officials at times that […]

Why Change is Hard

Switch by Chip Heath

August 23, 2019 by Classic 3 Comments

So this is the first of the books I had to read for my training this summer. I have to say that “Switch” was my favorite just because it really gets down into why change is hard for people and organizations. And it shows how small changes can build into such big successes. I am at an organization right now going through some upheaval since our boss was let go after our employee feedback survey and overall morale dropped over three years. Of course looking […]
