How much is that froggie in the swamp

The Dress in the Window by Robert Tregoning

Night Song by Mk Smith Despres

August 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am all for books about being different and being you. I like stories where the family accepts the people for who they are (even if maybe it’s not exactly 100% realistic).  And when I found The Dress in the Window (via an online reader copy due March 2024) I knew that this was one of those books. Granted I did not think, “OMG BEST BOOK EVER!” But Robert Tregoning created a story that was sweet and accepting of the young boy of the story. […]

Art in the eye of the beholder

How Dreadful by Claire Lebourg

Corner by Zo-O

July 13, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Art is in the eye of the beholder and that is very true in How Dreadful! This book is about a young artist, named Paty, who only has a few days before her art opening and nothing is ready yet. Having friends pose for her is not the problem, but their feelings about what they see as the final portraits are. That is until the art is in the show and others see the works. Claire Lebourg’s story was not necessarily for me, as I was thinking […]

The non-swimmer in his crocodile family

Swim, Jim by Kaz Windness

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One day in the swamp, three crocodile siblings are born. Kim, Sim and Jim. Kim and Sim both jump right into the water to swim, but Jim? Well, he just puts his toe in. And like typical siblings, the others tease Jim. But though his parents reassure him he will swim when ready, he feels the swamp is too big and he must find a smaller swamp, and then everyone will realize that Jim can swim in, Swim, Jim by Kaz Windness. Okay, so the […]

Presenting Olive Chen!

Oh, Olive! by Lian Cho

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Want a funny, sweet story about being yourself? Or a book that reminds you of Olivia the Pig with paints and color? You need Oh, Olive! This book, by Lian Cho (author and illustrator) might be the one you want. The story itself is familiar, but the way the author has presented it is clever and new. The art is fresh and silly, but keeps things in perspective.  Our Olive cannot paint a shape. Not a square like her father, nor a triangle like her […]

Being your self, and a little Dude-tude

I Absolutely, Positively Love My Spots by Lid'ya C. Rivera

Dude by Aaron Reynolds

June 6, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have recently seen a book that had a picture of a child with vitiligo, and though it was not the first time I had heard about it (Barbie had a doll, there is the model, etc) but it might have been the first time I had ever seen it in a book that was prominent as it was. That is, until I Absolutely, Positively Love My Spots. Lid’ya C. Rivera themselves has vitiligo and is a “be unashamed of who you are” promoter.  Overall, […]

Sweet

My Little Sweet Boy by Hilary Duff

May 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have said it before, that I do not usually expect a lot of a celebrity written book and in particular a picture books. I am not a Hilary Duff fan, but I was pleasantly surprised by her My Little Sweet Boy. The idea is simple, the narrator says all the things they hope for their child, the things the child will see and do and experience. The child will need to be patient, wait in lines, and feel the feels they must feel. They […]
