Wednesday’s child might be full of woe, but our Wednesday keeps on trying

Wednesday Wilson Connects the Dots by Bree Galbraith

March 26, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was not really the audience for the book Wednesday Wilson Connects the Dots. However, it is well written by Bree Galbraith, has good representation with a diverse cast, and is a familiar story of friendship, business sense and valuing yourself and work. The illustrations by Morgan Goble help transition from a mostly illustrated read to a mostly text read and gives you pieces that might not be picked up by the words. I was not aware this was a series until after reading, so […]

A brown rainbow is beautiful

A Rainbow in Brown by Pavonis Giron

March 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have decided to copy and paste what I have found as the publisher’s description of A Rainbow in Brown as it tells the story written by Pavonis Giron better than I can. Jo wants to paint all the wonderful things she loves. With a palette of red, yellow, and blue, Jo knows she can mix any colors together to create new ones. Her imagination takes flight as she explores painting with primary and by mixing her own secondary colors, each picture as beautiful as […]

Not a lively group of students

Spirited Volume one: Day of the Living Liv by Liv Livingston

January 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Liv Livingston tells her story in Spirited Volume one: Day of the Living Liv. Okay, I am not sure who the author actually is, maybe she has a ghostwriter? After all, Liv is starting a new school and her classmates are kinda a dead bunch to be around. No really, a lot of them are ghosts and boy do they have questions about Liv and being alive! (Yes, we need umbrellas when it rains.) This is a cute story about being yourself and that is […]

My last CBR16SweetChallenge (Round 1?)

From My Head to My Toes by Aly Raisman

Lights Out: A Movement to Help Migrating Birds by Jessica Stremer

Ollie, the Acorn, and the Mighty Idea by Andrew Hacket

January 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR16SweetChallenge  #Binge More picture books that I read … and in fact I have more to come, but this is already 760 words so giving you a break! Wrap up time! Picture books are a favorite of mine. You can get almost any subject out there and it’s presented in a neat (usually) package. Three books, three reviews and one theme: I read these. We know the story about body autonomy and enthusiastic consent, but From My Head to My Toes goes beyond that. Aly […]

I didn’t do justice to these books, so ignore my review and just get copies of the books!

Growing Up under a Red Flag: A Memoir of Surviving the Chinese Cultural Revolution by Ying Chang Compestine

My Name Is Long as a River by Suma Subramaniam

November 27, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I had the reading bug the other day, and found two books that are different, but important to know about. Both were read via online reader copies, and are future publications. I did have some trouble writing a review for them, as I wanted to do the subjects justice. I hope you, come Spring, pick up copies and enjoy, too. Growing Up under a Red Flag: A Memoir of Surviving the Chinese Cultural Revolution by Ying Chang Compestine is an eye opening look at the […]

World of Garvey

Garvey’s Choice: The Graphic novel by Nikki Grimes

November 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I am not necessarily a huge fan of Nikki Grimes’ work, I do enjoy most of what I read. And I have thought about reading their novel Garvey’s Choice for a while, yet,  I never got around to it. Then not as long as it has been out, but a while ago, I saved a link to an online reader copy of the graphic novel version, but in typical me style, forgot about it and did not find it again until recently. Which was […]
