He’s feeling and looking good, too

Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress by Christine Baldacchino

June 25, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In 2014 Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress must have been one of the most edgy books out there. Today, Christine Baldacchino’s book probably seems pretty tame in comparison with what we are talking about today. It is not just about a “boy who wears a dress” but so much more. While I enjoyed this book, felt it was realistic, I was not a huge fan of the art that Isabelle Malenfant created. Perhaps I was looking for something “less dreamy” looking. Yet, the tone […]

The World Needs More Purple Pepole by Kristen Bell

You Matter by Christian Robinson

June 5, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Current events have made people want books on race, being open and being different. Two books that are going to be big sellers from these categories are Kristen Bell’s The World Needs More Purple People and You Matter by Christian Robinson. Bell’s book is a “celebrity book” (in other words a bit indulgent). Yet there is a nice message to it. And, while it is a bit obvious what the point is and where it is going, it is not overly preachy. It just “is […]

A teaser for mid-April

The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi

March 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I am 55/45 with the story of The Magical Yet, the illustrations are at a 99.9999999% awesome (why not 100? Well, nothing is perfect.) The modern idea and surreal, color blasting realistic illustrations makes this a new book for all ages. Kids will appreciate the flow of the story and the adults can appreciate the overall theme and the art. Angela DiTerlizzi’s story of a young child having trouble riding their bike, wanting to give up and trying again is an established theme. However, […]

Who are you? Who, who, who, who?

I Am Not a Fox by Karina Wolf

February 12, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I Am Not a Fox has been coming up on several lists the last year or so. I was interested in this, frankly little cross-eyed creature (which I was assuming was a fox but knew by the cover things were not going to be what they seemed). But it was not until a browse in our children’s department sale items I found a copy. While Karina Wolf created a cute book, sometimes it is almost awkward with the pacing and text. The “be yourself” theme […]

Far in the future a tadpole becomes a frog

Tad by Benji Davies

February 5, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The cover of Tad was obviously what caught my eye when looking through some reader copies. Benji Davies has a story with great illustrations but had a few bumps to the story itself. Tad is a frog, well almost. She (like her tadbrothers and tadsisters) is not there, yet. But they will be. A simple telling of how a tadpole turns into a frog could have had a lot of potential. You could teach science. And since Tad is a bit slower than the siblings […]

It’s Okay to Be a Unicorn! by Jason Tharp

January 31, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While It’s Okay to Be a Unicorn!  is a fun and quirky story, it has been done before. The theme of be yourself and being different is okay has saturated the market. There is nothing new to Jason Tharp’s book. However, if you are looking for a new book to flesh out your collection, have someone who likes unicorns or horses or if you like colorful, bold and frankly goofy illustrations, then you need Tharp’s book. Cornelius makes the most amazing hats. The Mayor (Mayor […]
