The magic of these worlds is fading for me, but I’ll keep trying…

In An Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire

March 2, 2024 by genericwhitegirl 1 Comment

If you aren’t familiar with this series, it begins with Every Heart a Doorway, a novella about Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. West runs a boarding school for children who have been to other worlds and returned unable to readjust to regular life. Every Heart a Doorway introduces a lot of children who have traveled to these worlds, but doesn’t really flesh out individual stories. McGuire’s subsequent books explore these individual stories. One of the great things about this series is that you don’t […]

Be Sure

Lost In the Moment and Found by Seanan McGuire

Mislaid In Parts Half-Known by Seanan McGuire

February 27, 2024 by finnyfinfinn Leave a Comment

Keep up with your cardio; you never know when you might need to run away from a dinosaur. Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children novellas tell us about mysterious doors that appear to children in places no doors should be, with the words ‘Be Sure’ prominently displayed. And if that child, who usually doesn’t quite fit in their world, chooses to open that door and go through they will find a place more amazing than their wildest dreams. Usually the doors choose the right child, but not […]

“Buying up the bargains in the ol’ marketplace”

In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire

January 30, 2024 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

This is the fourth book in the Wayward Children series. It follows the exploits of children who have gone through doorways into other worlds and then come back. In this book we learn the origin story of Lundy, who was a teacher at Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children, which houses these strange youths. Lundy was an interesting character who we don’t get enough of in the first book. Eight year old Catherine Lundy has made her peace with the fact that she doesn’t fit […]

It’s a bit sweet for me

Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire

January 24, 2024 by Bea Pants 3 Comments

Beneath the Sugar Sky is the third book in Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series. There will be some spoilers for book one, Every Heart A Doorway in this review. The series centers around the students and faculty at Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. A school for children who have gone through magical doorways into other worlds (e.g. Narnia and Wonderland), and then come back for some reason. They are having a hard time adjusting to life in the “real” world and wind up at […]

Happy Birthday to Me!

Sleep No More by Seanan McGuire

The Innocent Sleep by Seanan McGuire

January 6, 2024 by finnyfinfinn 10 Comments

I got to read two October Daye books basically at once. Thanks so much Seanan McGuire for doing that just for me personally for this my birthday (I am in no way responsible for any of this). October Daye is a changeling living in the fair queen Titania’s perfect faerie court. She lives safely nestled in her beloved family’s tower, which is more than most changelings get and October is very grateful for her privilege. Though she and her sister do have to keep chasing […]

Disrupted Dreams And Cat Angst

Sleep No More by Seanan McGuire

The Innocent Sleep by Seanan McGuire

December 30, 2023 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

So it’s the day before New Year’s Eve and I have a cold so maybe I will hit my Cannonball anyhow Every year since I first started about five years ago I have endeavoured to review the latest in the October Day series, so I was shocked when I realised I hadn’t managed to do it this year. And this year is a bit of an unusual one because Seanan McGuire didn’t put out just one October Day book, but two. The question is though, […]
