These books are almost custom-made for me

In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire

January 10, 2019 by MrsLangdonAlger 4 Comments

I always understand and work to remember that everyone has different tastes, but I have to admit I was absolutely baffled when it came to my attention that there are folks out there who don’t enjoy the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. And then I remembered that not everyone is me, and while I don’t get it, I accept it. That being said, as I said in the title, these books are practically custom-made for me. Every kid who finds a world in these […]

Me? I’d be a Sleeping Beauty. 1000 years of sleep sounds fantastic.

November 18, 2018 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

Not yet able to get my hands on Night and Silence but jonesing for more Seanan McGuire, I plumped for Indexing, a book that appears to have initially been written in serialised form in which fairytales meet the X-Files. In a world where fairytales are constantly trying to force their way into real life, twisting people’s lives into forms that fit the narrative with often deadly results, it’s up to the ATI Management Bureau to step in before the ‘mimetic incursions’ can run amok. Each […]

Some more of Toby’s rather complicated family relationships are revealed

October 17, 2018 by Malin 1 Comment

Spoiler warning! This is book 12 in an ongoing series, it is NOT the place to start. There will be minor spoilers for previous books in the series, as it’s impossible to discuss this book without mentioning things that have happened in earlier books. If you’re interested (and you should be, this is one of the best urban/paranormal fantasy series out there right now), start with book 1, Rosemary and Rue.  Faerie knight and champion, and former private investigator October “Toby” Daye is not doing so well. […]

Faerie Tale Noir Still Going Strong

October 7, 2018 by LittlePlat 1 Comment

‘Night and Silence’ is the twelfth book in the October Daye series, and I’m going to be clear up front – while I will try as hard as possible avoid around any explicit spoilers from this particular book, I will be referencing previous books in the series. I am not so super-skilled at review-ballet that I can cunningly dance around everything. So mild spoilers ahead.   The October Daye series has been going strong for a few years now, and I felt that the 11th […]

And You Thought Your Family Was Bad at Sharing Information

September 27, 2018 by Jen K 1 Comment

This novel is pretty far into the Ocotober Daye series so spoilers abound for the previous novels.  If you have finished Kate Daniels and need a new fix, I definitely recommend this series, just give it two or three books to find its groove (basically seems like a standard warning for urban fantasy at this point). One thing I appreciate about the October Daye novels is that Seanan McGuire tends to make her characters have to deal with the aftermath of events.  After Toby’s mom held […]

BINGO! Or Rose becomes a Real Girl and hates it.

August 29, 2018 by melanir 2 Comments

Those of you who pay attention to my reviews (and I’m not saying you should) really shouldn’t be surprised that my So Shiny slot will be a book by Seanan McGuire. I tend to read her books either on their release date, or shortly thereafter. Her books are always, always pre-order status for me (less so the books written under Mira Grant, and I’m not sure why but they just don’t appeal to me in quite the same way). This one took me a little […]
