A Cartoon Lady and Gentleman in Period Dress stand back to back with pistols. There is a border of flowers with teacups, knives, pistols, and flying houses.

Jane Austen but with Lady Pirates. With Flying Houses.

The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton

February 2, 2023 by RevGirlUtena Leave a Comment

“It is violence that best overcomes hate, vengeance that most certainly heals injury, and a good cup of tea that soothes the most anguished soul.”  – Motto of the Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels Cecilia Bassingthwaite has been raised by her hypochondriac spinster Aunt ever since she was seven and her Father murdered her Mother and tried to kidnap her. Because of her father’s terrible reputation, the other ladies of the Wisteria Society don’t trust her enough to make her a full-fledged member, which vexes […]

Grouping two more re-reads together, with no thematic connection

His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik

The Last Hellion by Loretta Chase

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Re-read, October 2022: I cannot fully explain why I had the need to re-read this novel, the start of a promising but eventually disappointing series of alt-history books that asked the question, what if Napoleonic wars but also dragons? A decent part was this intense desire to re-read the part of the novel where Laurence realizes that a number of dragons that the UK relies upon for its aerial might insist on having female captains, and is forced to reconcile that fact with his posh […]

In which it turns out that I DO like kissing books

Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase

May 6, 2019 by TheShitWizard 8 Comments

Despite not really reading romance novels, I couldn’t help but notice some Cannonball discussions in which this one was mentioned a bunch of times. I’m super glad that I lurked on those threads as, although I hadn’t really been sure if romance was my flavour, it turned out that I absolutely loved Lord of Scoundrels, which was the most fun I’ve had reading this year. Jessica Trent’s brother is a nincompoop. A nincompoop who’s managing to fritter away his fortune with his high society friends, […]

Hellion with a heart of gold

June 1, 2018 by Jen K 3 Comments

This was supposed to be a fluffy, fun read before I tackled my Kindred re-read but instead it made me feel all emotional! I first met Vere Mallory in The Lord of Scoundrels, where he was the somewhat dense, but overall likable and easy going friend of Dain.  This novel gives Vere’s extra depths, explaining why he chooses to drown his sorrows in a daze of booze, fighting, and women after losing almost everyone in his family that meant anything to him.  Vere was the […]

I didn’t expect to like this so much!

April 20, 2018 by narfna 13 Comments

I’m so close to giving this five stars. I’m honestly not sure what’s holding me back. I had such a fun time reading this book! I borrowed the e-book version from my library and read it in a browser, and now I’m upset that all my bookmarks are going to go away. I never bookmark pages in a romance! (Okay, well, I never bookmark pages in a romance because I like the prose. I quite frequently bookmark the sexy parts for future reference.) But dangit, […]

Thoughts on Lord of Scoundrels

March 27, 2017 by faintingviolet 5 Comments

This friends, is why you review books right away. Because I don’t really remember a darn thing about this audio book I finished it last Monday. You see, I’ve been packing, and moving, and generally trying to survive work. While not the best time to try to read and review, let’s see if I can’t give this book a fair shake. Overall impressions: it was good. I cranked up the audio speed though because the narrator was a bit laconic in her delivery, but her […]
