Well that was a thing

Clear: a novel by Carys Davies

February 4, 2025 by bjornsnipe 1 Comment

I have to love when a book goes exactly where you thought it was going from the synopsis, and then goes somewhere you never even considered. Clear is very much that book. It’s set during the Scottish Clearances of the 19th century, when farmers were shuffled off the land they rented so that the landowners could make more money out of crops or livestock. John, a minister who has quit his church to help find a new one and thus has monetary issues, has been […]

The One Where I Don’t Like What I Think I Will Like

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

Perfect Prey by Helen Fields

April 23, 2022 by Zirza Leave a Comment

The Thursday Murder Club (Richard Osman) ** Perfect Prey (Helen Fields) ***½  Somewhere, in a very British and very sedate retirement village, a group of seniors get together in the jigsaw room where they solve unsolved crimes. They’re pushing eighty, they have opinions on which type of cake is better (walnut). They are Ron (former commie rabblerouser, scourge of the Thatcher era), Elizabeth (former detective with a fantabulous past full of the sort of intrigue James Bond could only have dreamed of), Ibrahim (former psychiatrist […]

You’d think Time-Traveling witchery would be enough of an obstacle to overcome

May 30, 2015 by NTE Leave a Comment

My Highland Bride, which stars a hard-headed, Scottish nobleman, an equally stubborn, time-traveling Southern lady (& her sister), a set of unfortunate circumstances, a few too many “noble” intentions, and a long tangled road to the happy ending.  It’s the second book in Maeve Greyson’s Highland Hearts series, and the ending certainly leads right into book three, whenever that might be coming.  Watching Kenna and Collum but heads (and hearts) was entertaining, although I could’ve done with about a third less problems popping up in […]

Scottish black comedy madness.

May 28, 2015 by narfna 3 Comments

Okay, so biting the bullet on my next couple of reviews because I’m behind and don’t want to get even further behind by being paralyzed about what to say. Bottom line about One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night (which is apparently named after a Robbie Williams song–thanks, Kat!): super fun spoof of action films in book form. Great characters even though they could have been flimsy. Very funny. Features dialogue written in the Scottish dialect, which I thought was really fun (but […]
