The Art of the Con

The Lies of Lock Lamora by Scott Lynch

August 30, 2024 by Tracy 1 Comment

This is like a grittier, adult Six of Crows (though I would argue that SoC doesn’t feel particularly YA). The main character, Locke, is highly intelligent, and the book features found family, cons, and morally gray characters whom you nevertheless root for. Be aware that there is a notable absence of plot armor – Lynch doesn’t pull punches when it comes to violence or death. Lynch interweaves present day Locke and company, who call themselves the Gentleman Bastards, as they work on a con while […]

When the stakes are high the outcomes are ironically less fraught

Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch

October 18, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I find the books quite riveting but also a bit repetitive, if that makes any sense? I’m debating why I rated this three stars upon finishing it (here I am, coming up on about a two month delay between reading and reviewing), and I think it has to do with the narrative arc. We start with an in media res prologue that messes with the fundamental premise of the entire book, aka that Jean and Locke are on the outs. It doesn’t seem like we’ll actually get […]

thank you to my friend Evin

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

Another “why did I wait so long??” book, courtesy of the Evanescent Evin! I do tend to pithily categorize any number of books as Tamora Pierce but with/for x, but it’s always meant as a true compliment to a woman who I think was doing the work many years before it became hip to do so. So in that vein, I think that these books are Tamora Piece-esque in their jumble of characters and vague setting, but that’s probably where the comparison grinds to a […]

As They Say, a Rollicking Adventure

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

July 24, 2021 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Old Series The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch is the first book in the Gentleman Bastards series, first written in 2006. I did not find it an easy read at first. Not because it isn’t well written. Lynch writes with great detail and imagination. Initially the book covers the escapades of the thieving Gentleman Bastards, rather than character studies or relationships. The shenanigans are great fun and cleverly crafted, but the characterization was a bit thin. The first half of […]

Gentlemen Bastards nos. 1 and 2

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch

December 29, 2020 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

I started The Lies of Locke Lamora for a book club that started in March 2020 and was quickly derailed by COVID.  I finally finished both it and the sequel…on December 30.  Take that, COVID! The Lies of Locke Lamora is a great read.  Meaty, full of grit and gallows humor, but also love and friendship and camaraderie. Excellent world-building,  really immersive descriptions of the town of Camorr and its very seedy underbelly. It’s hard to sum up but let’s try:  Father Chains, a monk […]

If you’ve got trouble

September 21, 2018 by Shibuyama Leave a Comment

Do you love the giddy ridiculousness of a good heist story or a long con that finally comes to fruition and leaves the sneering, callous rich bewildered, humbled, and a little poorer? The “Gentleman Bastard sequence,” as author Scott Lynch has called it, has….some of that. If you dig through a whole bunch of other stuff. Currently three books long with more allegedly to come, the series centers around Locke Lamora, a street orphan who ended up as an apprentice of sorts in a secret […]
