Showing how #2 can be #1 in helping the natural world

Steve the Dung Beetle by Susan R. Stoltz

September 11, 2019 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

I am on a roll with finding funny and education poop books. Steve the Dung Beetle: On a Roll could have been dull. But Susan R. Stolz’s text makes this a story about what the dung beetle does in a not “laugh out loud manner” (that comes with the jokes at the end) but in a fun and educational manner. Steve the Dung Beetle is for the slightly older crowd (age 5 and up) who like science and finds poo interesting. The facts about Dung […]

Here’s the scoop

Whose Poop Is That? by Darrin Lunde

September 5, 2019 by BlackRaven 4 Comments

Whose Poop Is That? (yes, that says poop) is not a crappy book. It is refreshing. Darrin Lunde created a good, solid introduction for the young child about animal waste. It tells you about what animals eat. And at the end, the afterwards also gives facts about animals not talked about and their poop. This book is not gross, but straight forward and scientific. The illustrations are drawings, so you are not even getting to see the “real deal,” just a representation of the results. […]

Doctor Strange Explains Why Time Travel is Possible

The Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli

August 25, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Ever since I’ve started traveling more for my new job, I’ve gotten back into audiobooks. (I liked them in college because of the long drives to and from school.) Long audiobooks stress me out because of library due dates, so this short four-discer read by a celebrity was perfect for a quick round trip through North Texas. In The Order of Time, theoretical physicist/brainiac Carlo Rovelli poetically and accessibily skims the surface of our understanding(s) of time. He includes a wide but shallow overview of theories […]

Monkey See Monkey Tell Time

Monkey Time, by Michael Hall

August 21, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you can get over the Minutes basically bullying the monkey in Michael Hall’s Monkey Time, the learning about telling time (with the use of a lot of minutes) and the science facts at the end, are fun. And that is the story. We learn about how one Dot is a Minute; 10 make up ten minutes and so on. But the dots tease monkey to the point when (spoiler) he catches the last minute he wants to eat it. Okay; I did and did […]

We All Deserve to Be Happy

Happy Fat: Taking Up Space in a World That Wants to Shrink You by Sophie Hagen

August 15, 2019 by lumenatrix 2 Comments

I found the incredibly funny Sophie Hagen through her podcasts, Made of Human and Secret Dinosaur Cult. She is a lovely Danish standup comedian that now lives in London and she is very, very funny. She is also fat, and has been for most of her life. As most of us who are on the heavier side probably know, this means she has had certain experiences in life that are less than ideal. She decided it was time to really look into the ideas that […]

Surgery Before Anesthesia and Antiseptics

The Butchering Art by Lindsey Fitzharris

August 15, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

Bingo 17 (Science!) The Butchering Art is part biography and part history of medicine, but mostly medicine. Do not read this is you are squeamish about some fairly graphic descriptions of surgery before things like antiseptics and anesthesia. The focus of the book is one the career of a Quaker named Joseph Lister in Victorian England; if his last name sounds vaguely familiar it should, and I’m surprised it doesn’t get more attention or pointed out sooner than it actually does. I’m also slightly ashamed […]
