Space…. The adventure

Clouds in Space: Nebulae, Stardust, and Us by Teresa Robeson

September 13, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In the early part of the later section of August 2024 a book came out, but it was lost in the shuffle of the wonderful and crazy that is the book world. I became aware of it when I found an online reader copy of Clouds in Space: Nebulae, Stardust, and Us by Teresa Robeson. I decided lunch was dull enough, so let’s spice it up with the stars. This fairly quick reading picture book at first read did not grab me. It was more […]

A Tree Is a Community by David L. Harrison

September 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Usually I prefer a non-rhyming format when it comes to reading a picture book, especially or even though it is for a younger audience. However, A Tree Is a Community might have benefited from a rhyme format. Yet, the way it is presented is well done and is executed well. The text is wonderfully expressive and poetic (the leaves are like dresses; seeds grow and WHOOSH!) and I think it would be fun to read aloud (personally I think a one-on-one setting is best, but […]

Which way the wind blows

Wind Watchers by Micha Archer

Why Does the Wind Blow?: Weather with the Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

August 29, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I find books that can be “themed” I enjoy writing about them. Even though both of these books were quick reads, they work extremely well with each other by being themed as Wind Books. They work for multiple ages, allowing both books to grow with your child. Wind Watchers by Micha Archer was read via an online reader copy and is due March 2025. This will give me time to read it again, not so much because it was the best book ever, but […]

Ironheart: the other metal superhero

Marvel-Verse: Ironheart by Eve L. Ewing and various

August 28, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Another book in the Marvel-Verse graphic novel series I found is Marvel-Verse: Ironheart by Eve L. Ewing, Brian Michael Bendis, Kevin Libranda, Luciano Vecchio, Marco Rudy, Nico Leon and a few others. I hadn’t planned on writing another Marvel review (even though I have read two of the baddies,  Marvel-Verse: Kang and Marvel-Verse: Kraven the Hunter, plus two of the Guardians of the Galaxy comics: Marvel-Verse: Rocket & Groot and Marvel-Verse: Guardians of the Galaxy. But honestly, I was not as impressed with them as I had […]

Purple thumbs and stabby plants

Prunella by Beth Ferry

August 14, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Along with Millie Fleur’s Poison Garden by Christy Mandin, the picture book Prunella by Beth Ferry and illustrated by Claire Keane, has given me a new category for books I like: Plants that are Not Your Cute Fluffy Pretty Garden Variety. The surface story is the same with both books: girls who love the spookier, odd, weird, dangers, spiky, thorny plants. They like them so much that they are isolated from their communities and peers. In both cases, the parent(s) encourage this individuality, even if […]

Learn how to go

Space: The Final Pooping Frontier by Annabeth Bondor-Stone,

A Stinky History of Toilets: Flush with Fun Facts and Disgusting Discoveries (Wacky Histories) by Oliva Meikle

July 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Have you ever needed a bathroom? Usually you’re close enough to one so there are no issues. Yet, what happens when there are no bathrooms? You just might have a messy situation, that’s what. Now, we all take it for granted. It is just what it is. Though, if you are like me, you might have a story or two (I have done or seen: tinkling on a snake, slipped on some wet leaves, used a (thankfully) one-seater in the middle of winter, and would […]
