The nature of a boy

Pansy Boy by Paul Harfleet

April 3, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The theme of Pansy Boy is familiar, but the presentation is new. The artwork is unusual and classical. The “ugly” and “beauty” (the ugly of the hateful things that are said, and the beauty of the young boy, the birds, and the flowers) are shown in fresh ways to move things along. Paul Harfleet made an experience book. The rhyming aspect could work for some people, but sometimes it took me out of the moment. The overall theme of things is bullying because the main […]

Dad, me and the solar eclipse makes three

Eclipse by Andy Rash

April 3, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you get the chance to read Eclipse by Andy Rash before April 8, 2024, please do. However, my store is having issues with trying to locate copies (this was read via an online copy). Still it will be great after the events. The idea is simple: a boy learns about a solar eclipse in his area. He finds out the exact location closest to him) that will be in the direct path of it. His dad okays them going, they pack their bags, go […]

The Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of Pooping! (But classy)

Ooo…Poo! by Elliot Kreloff

March 21, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Everyone poops! In the ocean, on land and even the sky (WATCH OUT!) and in this book, Ooo…Poo! You see written at an easy reading and understanding level, the different types and words, for it. It starts off with the end pages giving you a um…colorful…. bunch of words (feces) for the thing some call poo. Then we go farther along in the book by Elliot Kreloff (who looks like they enjoy the scoop on poop and really want to share with you) we see […]

Butt or Face out?

Butt or Face? Volume 2: Revenge of the Butts by Kari Lavelle

January 2, 2024 by BlackRaven 4 Comments

I read Butt or Face? by Kari Lavelle awhile back and enjoyed it perhaps more than I should have for a (physical) adult. The concept of a photograph showing you a piece of the “animal puzzle” to see if you can tell if it is a face or the posterior end is a hoot. Kids (and big kids) will get a kick out of seeing the adaptations the animals have to make themselves safe from predators or pleasing to mates (fake eyes, odd shaped noses, […]

The motion in the ocean and other places

Hands-On Science: Motion  by Lola M. Schaefer

December 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have been reading more books on science as I was never a science kid growing up. And honestly, if they had taught science this way, I probably would be a lot better at it. Rule number one: do not assume someone else has taught the basics (this also works for English/spelling as well). Rule number two, do experiments. And rule number three, make them fun. And it does seem that the Hands-On Science: Motion book has all those things. Lola M. Schaefer gives you science and shows you practical […]

2024 is going to be a busy year

Our Nipa Hut: A Story in the Philippines by Rachell Abalos

I Am Both : A Vietnamese Refugee Story  by Kerisa Greene

Two Homes, One Heart  by Jessica Young

All About Color by Elizabeth Rusch

Of Words and Water: The Story of Wilma Dykeman—Writer, Historian, Environmentalist  by Shannon Hitchcock

It is a picture book reviewing round up time! My theme is that of cultures. Of course we know the concept of “country and culture” but sometimes a culture can be something you do not immediately think of.  Yelena and Papa take care of their nipa hut and it takes care of them in Rachell Abalos’s picture book, Our Nipa Hut: A Story in the Philippines. Due in February 2024, I was lucky enough to have my book dealer send me a finished copy, as this is a book that needs […]
