Two books. Two different adventures.

Campingland by Ame Dyckman

Team Unihorn and Woolly #1: Attack of the Krill by Alexis Frederick-Frost

June 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I follow Ame Dyckman on X (formerly Twitter). I think she is a hoot and a holler and most of her books follow that concept. They might not have her blue hair (or pink or yellow or …) but they do have spark and sizzle. And Campingland (illustrated by James Burks) does have spark and sizzle… and a skunk, a few squirrels, fish, buggies, marshmallows, hot dogs, a beaver and a very interesting way to go camping. This is a funny and cute way of […]

Animals: the early warning system

Salvatore and the Goats of Mount Etna by Uschi Müller

June 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Several years ago, I worked on a friend’s (working, but more “gentlemanly” than “old school”) farm. One of the things I was asked to do was take goats to another pen, but only having a rope on the lead goat. I was told the rest would follow. And follow they did. All I can say is thank goodness I had hold of that main one! She was ready to show me goats could fly and I could fall face first in goop. That goop, yes […]

Explosive wonders

Volcanoes by Nell Cross Beckerman

June 5, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Dear Sir or Madam, will you read this book? Won’t you please take a look? Volcanoes by Nell Cross Beckerman has no typos, just the facts as planned. Oh don’t be shocked by Kalen Chock’s illustrations. They are fantastic as we watch the drastic explosions, creations and heat. Everything is so neat! Dear Sir or Madam, will you read this book? Won’t you please take a look? Granted not until August 2024, but once you do, you’ll be craving more. You will see how wonderful […]

I read two fun books

The Chilling Ice Rink Escapade by Michael Anthony Steele

Willa and Wade and the Way-Up-There by Judith Henderson

June 3, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Two books I recently read to help cleanse the palette some more (I was still working on a horror book I thought was Young Adult, but would lean a bit more adult, and therefore, more graphic , so maybe it was “new adult?” But regardless it was a lot to take and I needed “happy time” to clean my brain) and to see if one of them was good for the nephew. I picked up (as an online reader copy) Willa and Wade and the […]

Bring Back My Color

The Gray City by Torben Kuhlmann

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While it was hard to put down, the pacing of the not-so-picture book The Gray City is a bit slow. Each chapter is only a few pages long (and as read via an online reader copy I am not sure of the final format size) but the page is filled. And even when everything is gray there is still color, hinting at the revelation our heroine, Robin, learns at the end of things.  This story unfolds, as said, a bit slowly. Torben Kuhlmann wants you […]

Else B. in the Sea : The Woman Who Painted the Wonders of the Deep by Jeanne Walker Harvey

May 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Else B. in the Sea : The Woman Who Painted the Wonders of the Deep by Jeanne Walker Harvey and illustrated by Melodie Stacey is due early June 2024. Therefore I read via an online reader copy. This is an amazing introductory picture book on a person, Else Bostelmann, who we are not probably familiar with. She was not only an artist but also a scientist. She was hired, in the 1930s, to paint the ocean. But not the waves or the creatures above those […]
