A Most Impressively God-Awful Read

Dune by Frank Herbert

May 31, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’m really torn as to whether Dune is truly terrible because it did not age well, or because it’s just bad. I don’t even see how it was as revolutionary as it’s reputed. This may be the worst thing I’ve read in a very long time, and it’s so bad, it’s actually kind of impressive. Most of the novel is characters standing around thinking “deep” thoughts or sometimes voicing said thoughts. Many have virtually no context and seem meant to be ever so meaningful and […]

Nice Blend of Science Fiction and Suspense

The Perfect Wife by JP Delaney

May 31, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley for free. This did not affect my rating or review. This book will be released on August 6, 2019.  So, I was pretty vocal about how badly I disliked “The Girl Before.” So you are probably wondering what in the world caused me to willingly pick out “The Perfect Wife” to review. Well, I heard that it had a lot of science fiction elements in it and since I want to read more science fiction this […]

We Were Pushed!

Terminal Uprising (Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse, Book Two) by Jim C. Hines

May 29, 2019 by sistercoyote 2 Comments

“I miss the days when all I had to worry about was that strange citrus smell from deck B.” (Kindle location 476) If you haven’t read Terminal Alliance, the first book in the series, be aware that this review will contain spoilers for that book. The short version is: If you like any of: comedy, scifi, “humans are space orcs”, zombies, and warmongering space-wasp lawyers, you’ll like this series. And if you don’t like any of those things, you might give it a try anyway.

“They don’t tell you that hurt travels at light-speed too.”

Nyxia by Reintgen, Scott

May 15, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Emmett Atwater is one of ten disadvantaged teens who have been recruited by super-corporation Babel for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: To travel into deep space to newly discovered planet Eden and mine its incredibly versatile and valuable material: Nyxia, an element that has seemingly endless possibilities (it can be manipulated into weapons, into a power source, into smoke, and much more).  Eden is inhabited, and Babel’s first mission there was deadly – the inhabitants of Eden (humanoid aliens) slaughtered most of an Earth crew, except for […]

Captain Marvel is pretty awesome in comics form too

Captain Marvel: In Pursuit of Flight by Kelly Sue De Connick and assorted artists

Captain Marvel: Down by Kelly Sue De Connick and assorted artists

Avengers Assemble: The Enemy Within by Kelly Sue De Connick and assorted artists

Avengers Assemble: Infinity by Kelly Sue De Connick and assorted artists

Back in the summer of 2016, I read what I believed to be the first trade in a run about Captain Marvel, but that turned out to be incorrect and Marvel had just been stupid in how they were rebranding and renumbering their comics. As I came to discover, the reason there was so little back story given about Carol Danvers, her powers and her role in the Avengers, is because despite being entitled Vol 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More, it was by no means the […]

Good Omens is a Love Story

Good Omens by Neil Gaimann and Terry Pratchett

April 23, 2019 by tillie Leave a Comment

An angel and a demon have been working undercover on Earth for a long time. So long, in fact, that they’ve become friends – of a sort. Together one of them does bad and the other does good – usually according to whether they’re demon or not, but even so; they’ve been on Earth long enough to help each other out. And maybe, just maybe, they both like Earth just a little bit. “People couldn’t become truly holy, he said, unless they also had the […]
