“But if you think there’s a man anywhere who can make me do anything I don’t want to do, you haven’t been paying attention.”

Heaven's Queen (Paradox, #3) by Rachel Bach

December 21, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Spoilers for this book and some for the first two books as well. This is a 3.5 star series for me, I think. I liked the first book well enough, but the series really didn’t get interesting until midway through book two, when the actual plot started to come out and play. That second book, in a rare occurrence for a trilogy, I think in retrospect was actually the best one of the series. It had the most exciting action, the most believable conflict, and […]

Pretty great second book, once I got into it.

Honor's Knight (Paradox, #2) by Rachel Bach

December 21, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

For me, this book and series are really 3.5 stars. I had SUCH a hard time getting in to this book. I feel like getting through the first fifty pages took me five hundred years, and it was even hard to pick it up in the first place. I don’t know what about it was making me react like that, but it’s not a normal reaction for me, so for that reason alone I can’t give this a full four stars, but I’m rounding up […]

“We are all of us only human.”

Ancillary Sword (Imperial Radch, #2) by Ann Leckie

December 21, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

The first time I read this book, my main complaint was that it didn’t have as obvious of a structure as Ancillary Justice, but on this second time through, I think I’m going to change my mind about it being less structured, and instead say that it’s differently structured. This book is structured around Breq’s journey from vengeful former A.I. enslaved to a tyrant, to having nearly as much power as that tyrant herself. What she does with that power is entirely shaped by her […]

“If you’re going to make a desperate, hopeless act of defiance you should make it a good one.”

Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch, #1) by Ann Leckie

Upping this to five stars upon re-read. Breq makes me feel feelings. I remember where I was when I read this first time, and I distinctly remember reading the first third or so of this book and just being profoundly confused about what was going on, but also thinking to myself, when I re-read this, it’s going to make so much more sense, and that turned out to be true. But what did surprise me on re-read is that not everything is completely clear, and […]

Parable of the Sower-Graphic Novel

Parable of the Sower by Damien Duffy

December 20, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. So the thing is this is my least favorite of Butler’s works. The story had a lot of plot holes that the graphic novel of course cannot and does not fix. Taking place in 2025, we follow the character of Lauren Olamina and her family that are living in what remains of areas around Los Angeles. Told in the first person, we get Lauren’s “insights” into her family, […]

Nine for the Tomb, and for all that was lost

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

December 7, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Official book description: The Emperor needs necromancers. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit. Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as […]
