Fights, Feelings, Fire, and mostly Fun

Fire Force, Vol. 17 by Atsushi Ohkubo

April 26, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

One of the things I’ve really enjoyed so far about the Fire Force series is that it takes totally standard plots and characters, and makes them interesting and entertaining. Vol. 17 of the manga really shows off these qualities. The basic story and hero are straightforward: in a world where people often spontaneously combust into mindless demonic fire monsters, teen-age Shinra Kusakabe joins the Fire Force who help take down these monsters before the wreak too much havoc in order to both protect people and […]

Feelings and Murderbot

Exit Strategy by Martha Wells

April 26, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

According to the inner front cover flap. Exit Strategy is the final novella of the Murderbot Diaries; except that now in about a week, book 5, the novel, will be due out. The saga of Murderbot continues with a real emphasis on a theme that’s kind of been there the whole time: corporate evil. Maybe it’s some of the news lately, but the whole profit over life vibe GreyCris and its people, some of whom Murderbot actually meets this time, give off seems pretty timely. […]

A Creepy Book About Supernatural Kids? Sign Me Up!

The Institute by Stephen King

April 18, 2020 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Stephen King never disappoints me. The Institute is well-written, engaging, mysterious, slightly creepy, and upsetting. King is a master at developing characters and making us care deeply about them. Then he develops new sets of characters and brings everyone together for an amazing plot. But smarter people e have written about King’s works, so I will stop. But he always impresses me. We start with a former cop turned drifter who ends up in a small town working on a railroad. Nothing to see here, […]

Recursion is repetitive

Recursion by Blake Crouch

April 15, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

Recursion is about memory, time, and how the human brain processes and perceives both.  New York City detective Barry Sutton is investigating False Memory Syndrome, a terrifying condition spreading across the US. Victims have memories of a life they never lived. Sometimes the false life feels more real than their actual life, causing heartbreak and occasionally suicide.  Helena Smith is a neuroscientist trying to find a way to record memories and reimplant them in the brain in order to help Alzheimer’s patients remember their lives. […]

For our June book club  we’ll be celebrating Pride Month the Cannonball way with a The Future is Queer book club focusing on speculative and science fiction written by queer authors and/or featuring queer characters.  Since the world has gone into a more protective mode in response to our current pandemic, books might be a little harder to come by, or you may have found your reading […]
