Do you cyborg?

July 9, 2015 by Mrs Smith Reads Leave a Comment

Cyborgs are a common theme in SciFi, so Upgraded, edited by Neil Clarke, with short stories from authors from around the world is a welcome anthology for the genre. I picked it up, specifically to read Madeline Ashby’s contribution, “Come From Away” but I was definitely invested in reading more. Unfortunately, more doesn’t begin to describe Upgraded. In all, there are 26 stories, which, might honestly be over-egging the pudding a bit. When your theme is so narrow that every story pretty much has to begin […]

All my fears were unfounded – of course I loved this book

Six days into the first manned mission on Mars, there is a huge dust storm, forcing most of the crew to evacuate, earlier than anticipated. Mark Watney, the crew’s botanist and mechanical engineer is impaled on an antenna and believed to have died. He wakes up alone, stranded on Mars with no way of signalling Earth that he is still alive. The next manned mission to Mars is scheduled in four years’ time, and even if he were able to send a signal to announce […]

Tho’ much is taken, much abides

June 24, 2015 by Lizbth 1 Comment

On a frozen world far outside of civilised space, Breq is distracted from her self-appointed mission of vengeance by a face from her distant past. Seivarden was the sole survivor of an assassination attempt on the Lord of the Radch a thousand years ago, a period in Breq’s past which becomes more and more relevant as the narrative weaves on. Breq is the last remnant of the troop carrier Justice of Toren, lost to all parts of herself and cast adrift two decades previously. She […]

Post-apocalyptic ice trucker romance. Yup, that’s a thing

June 23, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

In a post-apocalyptic future, most people live in the icy wastes of what used to be Siberia. While on paper, trade should be regulated fairly, in reality there is a monopoly controlled by one ruthless man, Duncan Bane, and he wants Raina Bowen tortured and dead, eventually. Raina needs to deliver a shipment of grain to one of the major settlements, but needs forged documentation to drive on the ice road. Wizard, the man who was supposed to meet her with said documentation, instead gets […]

A Thrilling Adventure…with a Few Weak Points

June 10, 2015 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

Evensong is the second novel from science fiction writer John Love. Set in the year 2060, it follows the latest mission of Anwar Abbas, a member of a special agency of the United Nations Executive branch (UNEX) nicknamed The Dead. Officially known as Consultants, members of this organization are cybernetically enhanced upon recruitment. Their purpose: to do the impossible. But this time Anwar’s mission is much more mundane: he is to act as a bodyguard for Olivia del Sarto, Archbishop of the massive New Anglican […]

I came for the dystopia, but stayed for the Ultraman references.

June 6, 2015 by ingres77 5 Comments

I am not, generally, a fast reader. These days, it’s a rare thing for me to devour a book over a weekend. Ready Player One started as a much-needed reprieve from presidential biographies (I’ve gotten bogged down in an FDR biography), and ended up a marathon session that left me both highly entertained and saddened by its inevitable end. For the few who haven’t yet read Ready Player One, it is (to put it simply) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but with 80s pop culture […]
