Well, I might as well get this over with. It’s intimidating panning a book everyone and their mother seems to love. Please don’t come at me with pitchforks. I will say this in The Martian’s defense, it has a stunning cover design and a really, really good premise. A clever botanist/engineer accidentally gets deserted on Mars and has to Macgyver his way to survival until someone can come back for him? Genius. If it sounds interesting to you at all, you should give it a […]
Cataclysm without, cataclysm within.
Where I summarily review N.K. Jemisin’s excellent fantasy, The fifth season. (Read the review here)
And the story picks up 300 years later . . .
If I hadn’t already read (and been blown away by) the first two books in this series earlier this year, I would have been very impressed with this book. But as it is, even though it is very good and exciting and has great characters and poignant themes and hints at even more to come, it pales when compared to the complexity and madcap storytelling of Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion. Those two books were chock full of stories and characters and layers of […]
My favorite of the series so far.
First, a warning: I have officially passed the point of objectivity for this series. You know you’ve passed that point when you no longer care what happens in a book series as long as you get to spend more time in its world hanging out with its characters. This isn’t a place I get to easily, but once I’m there, I never ever leave. Love, it is irrational. With that said, oh boy, this book was awesome. In retrospect, one of my favorite things about […]
Half Cannonball Completed! What? Yep. Who? Uh-huh!
Well, this is it! Book number 26. With this one I reached the Half Cannonball and met my goal!! I’d like to thank everyone for believing a small town boy from Indiana could finish such a daunting task! Dreams really do come true, Grams! Thanks of course go to Peanut, Lady Shoes, Dirty Carl, Rosie, Earl, Teresa “Butterscotch” Allen, Baby Shoes, and Mr. Medicine! We did it! And of course I can’t forget, GWAR! It’s been a heck of a ride, guys, I couldn’t have […]
What the hell even is this book.
Like, don’t be fooled by the gorgeous cover and the sassy blurb on the back cover, or even the simplicity and witty intrigue of the prose if you happen to glance at the first page. This book is HELLA CONFUSING. But, like, in a super interesting and entertaining way? That I can’t really explain? This is not a book for the casual sci-fi reader, first of all. If you like heist stories and stories about con men, you will probably have an okay time, but […]
