Is possibly better than the second one, but can’t really tell because I skim-read it.

October 6, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

Never again with this series! If I ever, ever get the urge to re-read it again, somebody smack me in my face-ular area. In all seriousness, I can’t tell if this book was genuinely better than the last one or not, because I sped-read most of it, focused only on the parts that caught my attention, and skipped large chunks of it that seemed stupid or boring. Anyway, it didn’t fill me with rage. I’m not going to go into huge detail, or really any […]

All Aboard the Noah!…and then Someone Dies

October 5, 2015 by tillie Leave a Comment

Holy babjeebus of holy smokes this book was wild. Intense, mysterious, sci-fi-y and inventive. Welcome to the sci-fi murder-mystery. We dive right in as Hana Dempsey is getting released from breeding duty. She lives on a ship, the Noah, that’s on its way from Earth to a new planet thousands of years away. Breeding duty is exactly what it sounds like; it involves sleeping for 9-ish months while you gestate and birth a child, then get administered a bunch of drugs and back to work. […]

It just keeps being awesome, you guys

September 29, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

Saga is my favourite comic book of the last few years and I feel like I do nothing but spend my days waiting for a new trade paperback to come out. I managed to save volume five for an unprecedented nine days from buying it until I actually read it, because I know that it’ll probably be another six months at least until I get more. The writing is flawless, the art is breathtaking. The plot is never, even for a second, predictable. The six […]

Money, Sex, Power: Lazarus #1-19

September 28, 2015 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

Lazarus takes place in the near future, where the countries we know have been abolished, and the world is governed by 16 wealthy ruling families. These families live in luxury, and those who serve them receive food and shelter. Everyone else is Waste. Each ruling family has what’s called a Lazarus: a member of the family who has been genetically modified and technologically enhanced to protect the family. Forever Carlyle is her family’s Lazarus. The youngest of her siblings, Forever has been trained since childhood […]

Hey look, it’s a title with the word “girl” in it that’s actually about a girl, not a woman

September 22, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I’m a bit of a chicken when it comes to horror, but so many cannonballers loved The Girl With All the Gifts that I thought I should give it a try. And I’m so glad I did! What a beautifully inventive story that kept me turning pages. There were some tense parts, but nothing strong or gory enough to give me nightmares. However, this is maybe not the kind of book you want to read on your lunch hour unless you have a strong stomach. […]

Why did I wait so long to read this book?

September 14, 2015 by Mrs Smith Reads 3 Comments

I’m almost ashamed to admit that until this year, I had never read any Octavia Butler. When I went through my original SciFi reading phase in high school, she was never even mentioned amongst my nerd-kin friends, and now, though I’m late to the party, I know I have found one of the best writers, of any kind, of the modern age. Kindred is Butler’s best selling novel and is still required reading for many university and college writing and gender studies programs. The story […]
