A flawed but still wonderful series ender.

January 20, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

So this shit right here is exactly why I read science fiction. It’s got EVERYTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLY WANT. Well, these last two books have been lacking the humor of the first two, mostly because the foul-mouthed poet Martin Silenus was relegated to a background role, but he was there a little bit at the beginning of the last book and the beginning and end of this one, so there was a little bit of humor there. But seriously EVERYTHING ELSE is here. You’ve got […]

“Welcome to fucking Wonderland” or, Adventures in Mathmagic Land

January 20, 2016 by crystalclear 5 Comments

Our adventures take place in a slightly dystopian future, where some people can tap into extra parts in their brains and gain X-men-like powers.  The people who have strong powers are called Greater-Thans, because they can access more than 10% of their brains at once.  Your “integration” level is the percentage of your brain you can use.  Normal people can only access 10% or less, so they are called Fractions, for a fraction of 10% (which doesn’t make sense to me, but whatever.)  Powers include […]

Ho Hum. So Much Nostalgia, So Much Meh.

January 17, 2016 by lainiefig 2 Comments

Do I love The Last Starfighter?  Do I need a new novel version of it?  Meh. Do I love 80’s games and remember them fondly?  Hell yeah, but even I got a bit tired of the references and repetitiveness in this book. This may be unrelated but these were my personal favorites: I listened to the audiobook of Armada because I so enjoyed the previous audiobook by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One, also read by Wil Wheaton.  This novel also threw in a lot of nostalgia for […]

A Wild Ride

January 17, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

What in the world did I just read?! Nothing could have prepared me for the wild ride Bitch Planet took me on. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything so in-your-face before, but I liked it. Bitch Planet is like The Handmaid’s Tale times 11. Basically, any woman deemed noncompliant is rounded up and sent to a jail planet officially known as Auxiliary Compliance Outpost, colloquially known as Bitch Planet. Who decides if women are noncompliant? A council of holy “fathers” meets to judge offenders […]

But Where is Red Going?

January 7, 2016 by Kiasha 4 Comments

In a world where people are sorted according to their skin/hair/eye colours (but like, even worse than in ours, obviously), Reds belong to the servant/slave class, forced to work underground to mine gasses needed to terraform the solar system and improve the lot of all the rest of the colours. Disobedience is punished swiftly, as Darrow learns early on, but a terrorist group called the Sons of Ares saves him and transforms him into a Gold, the ruling class, hoping to set the stage for […]

The End is the Beginning

January 5, 2016 by expandingbookshelf Leave a Comment

Whoa boy. I’ve read all three books of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, and I still don’t know how to describe them. I heard about them after they won some fantasy award, but they’re not quite fantasy. They’re in part sci-fi, dystopian and mystery, but those labels don’t really mean much to the book. The people tasked with solving the puzzle of the mysterious Area X know that they’re never going actually solve the mystery. They’re just hacking away at what they can. And we […]
