Crichton falls a little flat

March 30, 2017 by Mim 4 Comments

I think I read most of Crichton’s works one summer (I was hugely pregnant with twins and mostly bedridden.)  There’s a lot of great stories in the man.  However, I must have missed this one (perhaps it is newer than 2006? Yep, 2008) and honestly, I’m not so thrilled with the fact that I “went back” for this.  It’s no Timeline or Andromeda Strain.  It’s kind of close in sphere to Jurassic Park, but it lacks the humanizing qualities.  This is a story of man […]

Bowman’s in Space (Alternate title: So many pizza gifs, so little time)

March 29, 2017 by tillie 1 Comment

Perhaps it is a credit to my stupidity, perhaps a flaw in the genre that I was willing to read 145 pages of foreign world and odd references before I noticed that 3001 is actually the 4th book in the series (maybe the word “final” could have been a clue there, hmm? No?). Perhaps it is Arthur C. Clarkes brilliance that it didn’t matter at all. This book is a delight. “Do you believe in ghosts, Dim?” “Certainly not: but like every sensible man, I’m […]

Circus of Inhumans

March 14, 2017 by Julie Leave a Comment

Yes, it’s book six in a series.  You can probably go out and read the first five books before reading this one, but since this one takes a turn with a new character, Antimony Price, the youngest member of the Price siblings, you might be able to just read it on its own.  Antimony is the younger sister, and the aimless one who has not found a vocation or career, and is still living at home with her parents.  But that all changes when her […]

Fifties and Sixties Time Travel

March 4, 2017 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

Time-Jump by John Brunner (1973) I know I’m reliving my youth, but I picked up “Time-Jump” by John Brunner for some classic science fiction.  It was published in 1973 but contains his pulp science fiction stories from the periodicals of the fifties and the sixties.  This is a short collection of ten of his time-related tales.  At first glance, you’d think “these stories have all been done before” until you realize that these classic tales are the originals.  Written before Twilight Zone and Outer Limits, […]

What a Great Sneak Preview

March 3, 2017 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. I had no idea how much I was missing “The Girl With All the Gifts” until I read this free extended preview of “The Boy on the Bridge.” This is not a sequel they say, but it takes place in the same post apocalyptic world that Carey wrote about in “The Girl With All The Gifts.” We seem to be following another team that is out to figure out how to combat the hungries in a changed world. We start off following the POV […]

Intersectional Science Fiction

March 2, 2017 by ElCicco 1 Comment

Ascension is a sci-fi novel that shines a spotlight on characters whom you might not encounter in novels very often. Author Jacqueline Koyanagi wanted to write a story featuring people like herself and her friends, and so in Ascension we are introduced to some very strong and smart women (and a man) who might be living with physical disability, and/or have different skin, and/or be gay, and/or who might be involved in open relationships. While this is a refreshing change, and timely as many of […]
