I was going to give this four stars because I really enjoyed myself while reading it, but I didn’t get THAT FEELING, you know? But then I had this one thought afterwards that completely reshaped my perspective about the whole book and now I have to give it five stars. But first some context. This has been an absurdly well-reviewed book here at CBR (and everywhere else), and it pretty much came out of nowhere. It has been compared frequently to both Star Trek (because […]
Terrifyingly timely
There’s been a whole bunch of reviews posted for this book already, so I’m not going to spend a lot of time recapping the plot in my own words. Goodreads can help me out here: Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to the food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her […]
If you’re obsessed with firefly you’ll love this book [gif-edition]
I read this twice. The minute I finished it, I turned right back to the front and I read it all again. Shepherd Book is one of the quieter characters in Firefly. Mostly, he stays out of battles and on the edges of the scenes. It’s easy to forget those people sometimes, the ones who support the big damn heroes. But the Shepherd held the ship together. His mere steadfastness was what everybody on that ship needed. And the fact that he was a little […]
Stories like sassy little cupcakes.
This little book was just FUN. I normally avoid short story collections, since for some reason my brain does the opposite of what you would expect, and refuses to concentrate on any story that is less than one hundred pages long. Thankfully that wasn’t the case with Miniatures. I found this very short fiction collection extremely entertaining, and the perfect light read to distract me from real life stuff. Each story is 2,500 words or less. Some of them were published previously but a good […]
Time Traveling Clipper Ship
To Sail the Century Sea by G.C. Edmondson (1981) – This has some nice writing in the pure science fiction vein that I appreciate. Part of his Time Ship series, it relies heavily on the writer’s time with the U.S. Marines in WWII. It has some drawbacks: being the third in a related series of books about a group of US Navy men who patrol the sea and referring to past events, having a homophobic hero, and thrusting romance on us that doesn’t quite work. […]
Are There a Thousand Synonyms for Scumbag?
The Man with a Thousand Names by A. E. Van Vogt (1974) – I can’t say when I picked this up that I knew what to expect from a grand master like Mr. Van Vogt, but I was surprised by the original concept and the sheer audacity of his willingness to give us a rotter of a protagonist. Steven Masters is horrible. He’s the son of a billionaire who learned early how to manipulate every person in his life and takes what he wants. He’s […]
