Not quite as romantic and dashing

November 2, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Arabella and the Battle of Venus is the second book in “The Adventures of Arabella Ashby” series.  Last year I reviewed the first book, Arabella of Mars, and was delighted by it’s fun combination of the Regency era and sailing ships that travel interstellar winds between planets.  In fact, its escapism was sorely needed when I read it in November of 2016.  This time the adventure has its high points but also a lot more drudgery, making it less romantic and dashing than its predecessor, but […]

I know nothing about Finnish names

This kind of reminded me of the Greg Bear book I read recently: very detailed, drops you right in to the story without explaining much, big grand ideas about the future. This one was a little more readable. Just a little, though – it takes a long time (for me, anyway) to decipher the plot. A thief is in some kind of weird evolving prison, dying every day and being brought back to try to outwit his fellow prisoners over and over. A warrior pilot […]

My Big Ol’ Spoiler-Filled Review

September 12, 2017 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Never Let Me Go is one of the strangest books I have read this year and in order to try to make sense of it, I’m afraid I’m going to be engaging in some plot spoiling. Actually, this may not be overly spoiler-y, as the reader figures out most of what I’m going to reveal early on in the novel. Ishiguro wants it that way, I think, because his characters experience the same thing. They know what is going to happen to them, and yet…. […]

A bear mops a carpeted floor.

I actually didn’t remember this one going into it, so my hopes weren’t high, but it turned out to be one of the best installments of these first sixteen books, even if it’s a little dated (okay, I’ll be honest, part of the reason I liked it so much is BECAUSE it was dated–all the adorable little references to 14k bps internet speed and modems and THE INTERNET and chat rooms and their idea of “security” and such, not to mention the thinly veiled AOL […]

Let’s Do the Time Warp Again

August 25, 2017 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

Time Travelers Never Die by Jack McDevitt (2010) – I knew going in that this book was going to be a challenge.  For one thing, I don’t like time travel stories.  I’ve never been that interested in “I’m my own grandpa” plotlines, and if you can travel in time, where’s the conflict and the uncertainty?  But, I really like Jack McDevitt’s writing and have read many of his novels, so I thought I’d try it. It wasn’t bad.  Nobody is anyone’s own grandpa.  But, there […]

Some moments are beyond imagination.

August 5, 2017 by borisanne 2 Comments

Okay, I’m back. I haven’t lost my mind, or my grip on reality. Everything’s fine. It took me a long time to read this final installment of “The Dark Tower” series. Sure, it’s super long, but it’s shorter than a few of the other installments. I just truly didn’t want it to end, so I stretched it out, found distractions and procrastinations, and delayed the inevitable. This final chapter is less full of revelation, and doesn’t so closely ressemble a conspiracy theorist’s corkboard with pushpins […]
