I’m behind on this Animorphs re-read, and all my reviews, and my entire life.

The Unknown, #14 Ugh, this one was a dud. Just, a silly, silly premise. And worse, a silly premise that isn’t backed up by anything substantial at all. Just empty jokes and no stakes. I mean, literally it starts with a joke (horses that are acting weird, and that are secretly Controllers, and why???) and ends with a joke (all of this over an SPOILERS Andalite toilet!) It’s all harmless enough, but compared with the best books in this series, it’s just not satisfying at […]

Less Plot Recycling but Characters are Still Reused

July 28, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Even though I was underwhelmed by the first book,  The Abyss Beyond Dreams, I decided to persevere and conclude “The Chronicle of the Fallers”.  In the year 2384 a group of humans leave Commonwealth space to found their own society.  They find themselves sucked into the Void, where time moves differently and technology is dampened to nearly primitive levels, and dumped on a planet they name Bienvenido.  Not only does the Void warp space time, it also gives sentient creatures the ability to perform telekinesis and […]

According to Amazon reviews, I’m in the minority regarding this book

July 15, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I took advantage of my kids being in summer camp this past week to tackle a door stop sized sci-fi novel, The Abyss Beyond Dreams by Peter F. Hamilton.  Who seems to be only able to write giant books.  Once there was a time that I sought out books of significant width, as they would last longer.  And by last longer, I mean take me almost a week to finish.  Ah the halcyon days before having children.  Now I look through my TBR and calculate […]

Interesting concept, no interesting characters

July 10, 2017 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

I couldn’t figure out where to even begin writing a plot synopsis for this dense monster of a book, so I checked Amazon and Goodreads to see if there was a recap I could start with. They were all three paragraphs long or more, and that would be my whole review! So apparently nobody knows how to summarize this mess. Let’s see. A few ‘special’ misfits exist in our time, able to see all possible paths from all possible actions and skip to the best […]

A HUG IS LIKE VIOLENCE MADE OF LOVE

June 21, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

“When they say to one another, ‘May the Force be with you,’ it is precisely this that they mean: It is a wish that when the time comes to leap into the void and to make a decision based on instinct and trust, you are rewarded for that act and not punished. The hope is that if you meet the galaxy halfway, it meets you in the middle and carries you the rest of the distance.”   I literally checked this book out of the library […]

*EXCITED BABBLING*

June 19, 2017 by TheShitWizard 6 Comments

Shout-outs are due here to Mswas Saws for recommending this, and to Is for buying it for me, therefore gifting me with one of my new favourite books. I read this in two sittings, only reluctantly putting it down for a short time while I ate and then being gutted on finishing it that I wouldn’t be spending any more time in this glorious world (it definitely has more than a few re-reads in its future). Our not too distant future is as depressing as […]
