Coming to America

Frankie D, Vegan Vampire by Sally Dutra and Brian Dutra

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Frankie D, Vegan Vampire by Sally Dutra and Brian Dutra, with illustrations by Tiffani Brown is set up as if The Addams Family were from today, a lot more modern (though their understanding of things still not the same as “normies”), plus were actual vampires. This is a fun and sweet book. The silly and clever retelling of a fitting in theme has been done before, but the humor this time around makes it fresh. The characters are maybe a bit of caricatures (there is […]

Read Everything And ‘Den Some!

I Want to Read All the Books by Debbie Ridpath Ohi

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I first saw the online reader copy of I Want to Read All the Books I skipped over it. Somewhat ironically, as I do want to read all the books, but I know I cannot, so I have to choose. But then I saw that it was by Debbie Ridpath Ohi. And that sealed the deal and I was thinking that I must read. Ohi is one of those authors/illustrators of books that you need to read. Maybe you do not love the work, […]

Every day is a bit odder

Every Day V02 Another Day by David Levithan

April 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Reading some of the reviews on a well-know website known for having reviews, I found that I was not the only one who thought Every Day V02  Another Day by David Levithan had several weak parts. This is not a true sequel to Every Day but the companion of how the several months the characters A (a person who leaps into a person’s body for the day) and Rhiannon (high schooler) meet when A was in the body of her boyfriend, Justin, and the aftermath, […]

The nature of a boy

Pansy Boy by Paul Harfleet

April 3, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The theme of Pansy Boy is familiar, but the presentation is new. The artwork is unusual and classical. The “ugly” and “beauty” (the ugly of the hateful things that are said, and the beauty of the young boy, the birds, and the flowers) are shown in fresh ways to move things along. Paul Harfleet made an experience book. The rhyming aspect could work for some people, but sometimes it took me out of the moment. The overall theme of things is bullying because the main […]

This school has spirit

Spirited V02 Go, Ghoul, Go! by Liv Livingston

April 2, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The one thing I have with sequels is that if I read them too far apart, I forget parts of book one/the book(s) before. And that happened with  Spirited V02 Go, Ghoul, Go! by Liv Livingston and Glass House Graphics. I mean, I remembered that Liv is the only living person (if you don’t count the werewolves and creatures of the swamp and such, I don’t count vampires) in a school of mostly ghosts. I remembered that she has two good friends, a “mean-girl” in […]

Wednesday’s child might be full of woe, but our Wednesday keeps on trying

Wednesday Wilson Connects the Dots by Bree Galbraith

March 26, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was not really the audience for the book Wednesday Wilson Connects the Dots. However, it is well written by Bree Galbraith, has good representation with a diverse cast, and is a familiar story of friendship, business sense and valuing yourself and work. The illustrations by Morgan Goble help transition from a mostly illustrated read to a mostly text read and gives you pieces that might not be picked up by the words. I was not aware this was a series until after reading, so […]
