And you thought you had a rough picture day

Picture Day (The Brinkley Yearbooks) by Sarah Sax

April 26, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sarah Sax created their debut graphic novel (due late June/early July 2023),  Picture Day (The Brinkley Yearbooks) in a modern format but took a classic theme. The idea of trying to become popular, but there are still pitfalls at the top, has been done before. But with the characters, the ways they talk and act, are completely modern. We have Olivia (now Viv as it is “catchy” and memorable) trying to be seen. And the day of picture day she does just that. Along the […]

Be all you can be

I Can Be All Three by  Salima Alikhan

April 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is a simple, but powerful story of how one child has many parts to her. Three in fact (which is why the title is I Can Be All Three). The first part is her father and his Indian heritage, the second her mother’s German heritage and finally the third is her school and growing up American parts. But when her classroom assignment is to pick something that represents you and your culture for the Multicultural Day celebration, she is unsure how to choose. After […]

Awful Melodies but okay read

The Popularity Papers: Book Five: The Awesomely Awful Melodies of Lydia Goldblatt and Julie Graham-Chang by Amy Ignatow

April 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is my review for the graphic novel: The Popularity Papers: Book Five: The Awesomely Awful Melodies of Lydia Goldblatt and Julie Graham-Chang by Amy Ignatow Part of my issue with this book was that it is book five of the series, and it is not a series you can pick up in the middle of it. I find that if a book can stand alone, but still be a continuation, that is a good book/series. And while me the (physical) adult, could pick things up, […]

Second most fun I have had with a basketball book

Hoops by Matt Tavares

April 18, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport own The Matt Tavares graphic novel Hoops is the most fun I have had with a basketball story since Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen Yang. Based on real events, this is a great story for fans of graphic novels, basketball (girls/women’s, boys/men or either), or a great friend’s story. We follow the brand-new girls’ basketball team where basketball is king and the players royalty. That is, if they are the boys team. The newly formed girls’ team is expected to wash their own uniforms […]

Peace and hair-mony.

The Do-Over V01 by Rodrigo Vargas.

April 17, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I have had a rough few days, and I need to read but thoughts are not sticking, I find that younger/middle reader graphic novels are perfect. I get a fun story, but I do not have to get serious. And with The Do-Over V01 we get a cute story about friends, family, and confidence that has a nice message, but is not “too deep.” Adults might have to suspend belief a tad when it comes to this graphic novel by Rodrigo Vargas. After all, […]

This book, like a toot, if forced is probably s**t

Hello, My Name is Poop by Ben Katzner

February 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not sure why I wanted to read Hello, My Name is Poop.  I mean, I enjoy a book about poop as much as the next person, but this time, I should have flushed. Ben Katzner, Ian McGinty, and Rebecca Taylor are probably nice people and their graphic novel had potential, but it went for the obvious crappy joke every time. With a Mary Poppinsesque janitor and a diverse cast exploring the power of words, friends, and forgiveness, we had a story that could […]
