“But that didn’t mean his words had not been true. The most honest things were often said when you weren’t thinking.”

The Mistress Experience by Scarlett Peckham

This one, however, I thought was delightful! A great end to this trio, with a shiny building architecture’d by the first dude whose name now complete escapes me. Adam? While I still think Seraphina (who looks like Princess Una from the movie Stardust in my head) is my favorite of the trio, Thaïs comes second. Perhaps she would be first if typing her name didn’t require me to copy/paste every time…cursed umlauts. But Thaïs is that typical historical romance character, the out and open harlot […]

Elinor shook her head wearily. “You could have simply told us. Any of us. We would have kept your secrets.”

I’m not sure it really counts as finishing a book if you literally flip forward a huge chunk and then read the ending to sort of…figure out how the ending happens? But that is indeed what I did, because I wasn’t really vibing with the entire set up of this book. Which is a pity! Because I really loved Seraphina and her story, and I was all ready to dive back into this work of like, half consequences and half wish fulfillment. TO RECAP we’ve […]

a rare find indeed

The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham

Look, it’s hard to find het books wherein the female lead is in charge, or at the very least an equal participant in the romantic endeavors that follow. And the latter is also sort of unsatisfying when you’ve read an entire lifetime’s worth of books which parrot the whole “AND THEN HE RAVISHED HER, THAT RAVISHER” line. Peckham writes in a pretty decently long foreword about her experience with the whole rake/virginal woman who changes him and how she wanted to turn it on its […]

“I know what a quiche is, Your Lordship. I’m the fancy kind of whore.”

The Mistress Experience by Scarlett Peckham

December 21, 2024 by Nart 1 Comment

The third novel in the Society a Sirens series and just as good. Plot: Thaïs Magdalene is the most desired courtesan in England and proud of this. Her desirability is rooted in her renowned beauty, sexual expertise, and the exclusivity she has developed. Fiercely independent, once established, Thaïs has refused to take the same lover twice, or for more than one night. Determined to fund a school for girls like the one she had been, to give them more options than she had, she puts […]

“Love is a system of behaviors.”

The Earl I Ruined by Scarlett Peckham

Big Misunderstandings and the hard work of learning that being clever doesn’t mean you know everything. Plot: Lady Constance was schooled in a convent, and in the most predictable outcome of such an upbringing, has turned into something of a belligerently scandalous adult. She has worked to amass power through one of the only tools available to women – gossip. She wields it for good, or at least what she thinks of as good. In the first book in the series for example, she used […]

The boldly feminist historical romance you need

The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham

Portrait of a Duchess by Scarlett Peckham

March 10, 2023 by Owlizabeth 3 Comments

The second installment in Scarlett Peckham’s Society of Sirens came out this week!! And it was excellent!! And I think everyone should read this series!! I would love to leave this there, but there’s this word count I’m supposed to hit for this to count, so I suppose I’ll give y’all a little more. This series is about “fallen” women who have decided to accept, embrace, and use their tarnished reputations to improve the situation for all women. The heroine of the first, the Rakess […]
