I can’t tell if this is a good or bad thing.

House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas

May 26, 2022 by Leedock Leave a Comment

So many thoughts. First and most important? Please get a new editor, Ms. Maas. A brutal editor or team of brutal editors is imperative for the next book. Your literary garden needs some serious weeding, lady. The blooms are there but they are choked under the kudzu. The weight of these books pushes me closer to carpal tunnel syndrome unnecessarily. End of rant. Well, maybe not…This book is another doorstop. Took me over a month to finish it. I nearly stopped reading it several times […]

Charm and irreverance happen to be my two favorite traits.

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

Yep. Still riding the Maas train all the way to the station, I guess. This is the first book in the Crescent City series and it has all of the crazy world-building, will they won’t they, and wing-ed love interests that make a Maas book a Maas book. Whew. I really, really thought I was going to give up on this one until about 1/4 of the way in. Since this is an 800 page doorstop of a book, that was a good 200 pages of me […]

My conflicted thoughts about SJM continue to be conflicted.

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

I’ve gotta say, this is related and unrelated to this book, I’ve been seeing quite a few status updates on Goodreads (the vast majority from people I don’t follow) expressing pretty negative and dismissive opinions about romance and people who read romance that seem borderline misogynistic to me. There’s an attitude there that because they don’t read romance or fantasy romance (or whatever romance) they are better, smarter, more elevated than those who do. This is bullshit, and it is unkind. I would highly suggest […]

I Am Somewhat Less in Awe, But Still In It

House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J Maas

March 6, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Bryce Quinlan, half-human and half-Fae, has been revealed to be Starborn, and life has changed completely with it. But everything is not smooth sailing for her and Hunt after the dangers of the last book, for they have made powerful enemies, and their unbalanced world has dangerous secrets. After how much I enjoyed the last book I am a little disappointed. But first the good. The writing remains enthralling, the world-building exciting, and some of the twists and turns made me gasp aloud – while […]

Sort of sexy, not really addictive

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

February 27, 2022 by carmelpie 5 Comments

I’ve come to realize that most of my reviews start with “this book is a best-seller” or “this book was on a top fantasy/YA/scifi list” etc… The words that kept coming up for this series were sexy and addictive. Yes, and yes. So I went ahead and bought the four book series knowing that if it really was as addictive as everyone said it was, I would plow through the entire series in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I got bored with book one and […]

My interest in this series has waxed and waned pretty quickly

Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

Crescent City: House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas

I’m reviewing these two books together (I’ll try to stay spoiler-free for both of them) because I’ve read them in quite quick succession and because my disappointment in the one is heavier because of my surprise interest in the other. I will preface by saying, I’m not a huge fan of Sarah J. Maas’ books. Sorry, I’m not trying to harsh someone’s vibe if you’re into them, I’m not the target audience. Yet I read them because sometimes I’m in the mood–like for candy, for […]
