Not on the bandwagon for this series

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

May 30, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Throne of Glass sounded promising and it’s been on my list for a while. I finally picked it up; it starts off well, but then it seems to forget about the actual plot and focuses on the romantic possibilities of the incredibly obvious possible triangle between Celaena, Chaol, and Dorian, and the courtly scheming, mostly by two totally underdeveloped characters who might actually rather deserve each other. There is some supernatural evil looming in the background the whole time, but that too is pretty predictable […]

Faeries, Beasts, and a Whole New World

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

February 28, 2023 by krisbholland Leave a Comment

When I picked up A Court of Thorns and Roses from my local library, I wasn’t sure what kind of journey it would take me on. With a full cast of humans, faeries, and other mystical beasts, it seemed right up my alley. I devoured it in a single day. The first in a series of books, ACOTAR opens in the human world and focuses on Feyre. A young woman caring for her ailing father and two sisters, Feyre is hardened to the world around her. […]

Catwoman: Soulstealer Graphic novel by Louise Simonson

November 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The graphic novel adaptation of Catwoman: Soulstealer confused me at first. There are several of the Batman villains but no Batman. There are the people we know, such as Lucius Fox and Commissioner Gordan but not really “there” just “Oh yeah by the way…” And though she is a villain that we all know and love (or hate) Catwoman is the new gal in town, with Poison Ivy and Harley already established. We have Luke Fox as Batwing (yeah, I’m with Selina Kyle/Catwoman, what’s up […]

Something here went more wrong than usual.

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City, #2) by Sarah J. Maas

November 12, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

Usually no matter what feelings I am having for the books of one Sarah J. Maas—positive, negative, or meh—I at least find her books to be entertaining and I can’t usually put them down. Except for two books now: Kingdom of Ash, and now this one. I’m pretty sure I know why I wasn’t satisfied by this reading experience, and was quite frequently annoyed by it, but I’m not sure WHY it’s that way. In my opinion here two strongest books are A Court of […]

Book #2: So, I mostly liked the first book a lot. Wow, that wasn’t a very ringing endorsement. Let’s try it again. The first book pissed me off at the beginning, then got better, then bad stuff happened, and then it all worked out in the end. I can’t say I loved it, but I wanted to see what happened next, so that’s a plus. FYI – spoilers abound At the end of the first book, Feyre dies saving all of fae kind. The 7 […]

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1) by Sarah J. Maas

September 5, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is apparently a hot new series. I had no idea when my friend recommended it to me. I tried to borrow this first book from the library and found a whole bunch of people waiting in front of me. I was excited when I finally got it though! It actually took me a while to get into it though. We meet the main character Feyre hunting in the woods. That part I was OK with. She seemed to hunt with honor and needed the […]
