I feel like this series maybe is holding me hostage and I have Stockholm Syndrome for it.

Firstly, this book is bonkers. Secondly, Sarah J. Maas is not the author for me, a 32 year old person. The prose is out of control overwritten to impress and be MEANINGFUL. The characters pair up like lobsters and it is overwhelmingly heterosexual, which just makes me roll my eyes. Really, all these characters you just so happened to create just happen to find their soulmate or whatever and get together by the end? Really? This is the same thing that annoyed me out of […]

An entertaining, if uneven, young adult series starter

December 28, 2017 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I make it a point to read books that my students recommend to me. Overall, I’m grateful. Because of my students, I have read (and enjoyed) Wild and Room, as well as a smattering of other books. I had a rocky start with an online class at the beginning of the semester, but there was a major reconciliation that helped it continue smoothly, and one thing that happened was that a student mentioned that she was a major fan of Sarah J. Maas. I saw […]

Mostly Boring Dinners

November 18, 2017 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

Living in a forest during a freezing winter, Feyre and her family rely on her ability to hunt to keep them alive. When Feyre kills an animal that also happens to be a faerie, she is claimed by the fallen’s friend as payment for her transgression. Whisked off to a magical kingdom, Feyre soon starts to fall for the faerie prince that’s keeping her captive and hoping that she will be the key to his freedom from a curse upon his people. Lots of my […]

It’s a love/hate relationship.

Despite its numerous flaws, it seems I actually like this series quite a bit now. Sigh. A lot of the problems I had with this series are still there, but if I’m going to keep reading it, at some point I’m going to have to acknowledge that no one is holding a gun to my head and making me do that, and that some part of me is enjoying it enough to push past all the stuff that annoys me. At that point, it just […]

I liked this one???

August 29, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Honestly, I did not expect to like this book. It’s only logical. I assumed that I would have the same reaction to it that I had for the first three books in the series, which was basically to be entertained, but also half the time I’m rolling my eyes at the predictable plot twists, the shallow characters, the tell-not-show and idiom-filled writing (a symptom of weak worldbuilding). I just didn’t find any of it particularly compelling, especially Celaena, the central character. I found her to […]

It’s time to go to war

June 25, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This review is going to contain spoilers for earlier books in the series, and possibly some mild ones for the content of this book too. If you’re not caught up, you probably want to skip this review for now. Come back when you’ve read the books, they’re worth your time if you like action-packed fantasy. The beginning of this book finds Fayre back at the Spring court, after Tamlin made a bargain with the the High King and had her bond with Rhysand […]
