Magic wallpaper & a ghost in the yard

June 8, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

More sweet sugar from Sarah Addison Allen. I really liked The Girl Who Chased the Moon — there’s a couple of mysteries to solve, a lovely young lady as a main character (not to mention her gentle giant of a grandfather), and some magical cake-making. Definitely one of her better novels. “Living down your own past was hard enough. You shouldn’t have to live down someone else’s.” The Girl Who Chased the Moon follows two main characters. First, there’s teenage Emily Benedict, who has come to North Carolina […]

Not quite magical enough

June 1, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Sarah Addison Allen’s Lost Lake doesn’t quite contain the magical wonder that so defines her other books for me. It’s a perfectly serviceable romance, but despite the presence of a talking alligator and a teenage ghost, didn’t quite do it for me. “Eby wanted to say so much to her. She wanted to say that waking up is the most important part of grieving, that so many women in their family failed to do it, and she was proud of Kate for fighting her way back. But Eby […]

Meet the Waverleys

May 26, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Thank you, whichever Cannonballer recommended this series to me when I said how much I was enjoying some of Sarah Addison Allen’s other books. It was an adorable, and I can’t wait to read the next one. To pass it along, anyone who likes Sarah Addison Allen or Alice Hoffman (Practical Magic) should definite check out the Waverleys. It was full of all that sweet magic and wonderful family drama. “She sometimes thought she was going crazy. Her first thought when she woke up was always how to […]

Peaches are really just hairy nectarines…

April 13, 2015 by Lynn Leave a Comment

I downloaded this from the local library the other day so I would have something to listen to while I walked in the evenings. (Even though it feels like it’s 90 degrees already and it’s only April. What am I going to do when it’s August???) Anyway, I needed something sort of fluffy and chick lit-esque that I could sort of half listen to while I huffed and puffed my way through the soup that is known as Florida air and I thought this would […]

A nice glass of sweet tea.

March 30, 2015 by Fiat.Luxury 3 Comments

Lately I’ve been into non-fiction.  Some of them have been uplifting and given me renewed hope in humanity–would that there were more Dr. Mutters in the world, right?  How amazing that we can treat things with antibiotics! However, some of them, although well written and fascinating, make me despair for humanity.  The Devil in the White City‘s psychopathic murderer bummed me out, and I’m currently reading King Leopold’s Ghost, which is very good and also seriously so depressing.  At the 50% mark, I needed a break.  The public library […]

A very satisfying sequel to a book I really love

February 7, 2015 by Malin 1 Comment

Disclaimer! St. Martin’s Press gave me an ARC of this through NetGalley in return for a fair and honest review. Ten years have passed since the events of Garden Spells. Claire Waverly has put her catering business on hold and branched out with boiled candy. The lemon verbena can soothe any throat or heartache, the rose candies can make you recall lost love and the lavender makes you calm and happy. After a feature article in a high-profile magazine made demand for her candy explode, […]
