Say Goodbye to Hollywood

The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood by Sam Wasson

February 21, 2020 by jeverett15 5 Comments

When you decide to read a book about Hollywood in the 70s, you have to prepare yourself for a lot of cocaine and misogyny. And of course when you decide to specifically read a book about a movie directed by Roman Polanski, you have to prepare yourself for far worse. To answer some questions I’m sure some of you have up front, yes, the book does address at appropriate length Polanski’s rape of an underage girl and his fleeing the United States, but yes, the […]

I still wish we’d have done this one for CannonBookClub.

This book was an alternative pick for the non-fiction (Hollywood history-centric) #CannonBookClub, and it was my pick. I saw it and I knew I had to read it ASAP, even if it didn’t end up winning the vote (it didn’t; that honor, of course, went to Life Moves Pretty Fast, which I haven’t read yet as of writing this review). I’d actually never seen Breakfast at Tiffany’s before a couple of weeks ago, though I’m familiar with its legacy, both positive and negative. (Positive: Audrey […]

Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M. was my selection for this quarter’s Book Club, although it wasn’t selected. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s was one of the earliest pictures to ask us to be sympathetic toward a slightly immoral young woman. Movies were beginning to say that if you were imperfect, you didn’t have to be punished.” While Wasson’s main goal is to educate his audience on how Breakfast at Tiffany’s went from novella to motion picture but it is also a brief history about the shift from movies in the ’50s […]

A kookie little romance

April 30, 2017 by ingres77 12 Comments

This was a selection for the May nonfiction book club, and it lost. I’m so disappointed, you guys. But, I will persevere. Wasson recounts the history behind both Truman Capote’s 1958 novel, and the 1961 film directed by Blake Edwards and starring the inimitable and unconquerable Audrey Hepburn. Overall, this is a pretty good snapshot of Truman Capote, Audrey Hepburn, the film industry of the late 50s and early 60s, and the shifting beauty standards of the era. All of which amounts to a pretty […]
